Betting on the Air Force Falcons (1-0)

Spread: +27

Despite making their season debut just last Saturday, the Air Force Falcons still got their 2017 campaign off to a sizzling start by shutting out the VMI Keydets, 62-0.

Junior quarterback Airon Worthman was very efficient in the win, completing eight of his 12 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns. The real story for Air Force, though, was its unstoppable running game. 16 different players got a rushing attempt on Saturday, with the team finishing for a combined 67 carries, 457 rushing yards and seven TDs.

It goes without saying that the Falcons’ defense had a stellar afternoon as well, holding VMI to just 95 yards on offense and forcing the Keydets to punt the ball on more occasions (10) than getting first-down conversions (six).

However, a rout over a mediocre team from the FCS was to be expected. This weekend’s clash against Michigan should serve as a real test for the Falcons, who have lost three-straight games against schools from the Big Ten. On the bright side, they did go 2-1 against the spread in these contests, which includes a 31-25 loss to the Wolverines from 2012 that still had them cover the spread as 21.5-point underdogs.

Betting on the Michigan Wolverines (2-0)

Spread: -27

With the 36-14 win over the Cincinnati Bearcats, the No. 8 Michigan Wolverines exhibited their all-around prowess once more as one of the nation’s top programs.

Running back Ty Isaac secured his second consecutive 100-yard rushing performance in as many games this season after going off for a career-high 133 rushing yards against the Bearcats. Fellow senior Wilson Speight also had a more composed outing in the win, completing 17 of his 29 passes for 221 yards and no interceptions.

It’s great to see that Spieght, who threw two picks in Week 1’s win over the Florida Gators, seems to have improved his accuracy in the passing game. On the other hand, the Wolverines have still committed two turnovers in each of their first two games this season, and its these couple of errors that allowed Cincinnati to hang tough in last Saturday’s contest.

The Bearcats only trailed by three points by halftime, and it wasn’t until Michigan scored 19 unanswered points to start the second half that Jim Harbuagh’s crew sealed the victory in Week 2. As such, the boys from Ann Arbor aren’t really winning their bouts in dominant fashion, and us bettors should really take note of these developments.

Case in point: the Wolverines have pervailed victorious in all nine of their previous home games, but they went just 3-6 against the spread at The Big House during that span. That being said, look for the visiting Falcons to give Michigan quite another scare in Week 3.

Writer’s Prediction

The Wolverines stay undefeated, but the Falcons put up a valiant fight and cover +27 with a final score of 33-20.
