Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova’s Edge (+280)
After enduring quite a rough season so far, Pavlyuchenkova is putting up her best performances of the year at Wimbledon. The World No. 23 defeated No. 11 seed Timea Bacsinszky to reach the round of 16 at Wimbledon for the very first time in her career.
Pavlyuchenkova dominated the higher-seeded Bacsinszky in almost every aspect of the game. She put 76 percent of her first serves in play, a personal tournament-high, and won 82 percent of first serve points. She also continued her impressive work on the net. After converting 17 of 20 net points, she’s now won 62 of 80 net points (78 percent) in three matches.
Pavlyuchenkova’s excellent return game has also been outstanding. She entered the tournament fourth on Tour in terms of break point conversion (53.6 percent), and she’s broken her opponents’ serve 11 times in three matches thus far. That return game, coupled with her aggressiveness on the net, should give Pavlyuchenkova a fighting chance against Coco Vandeweghe’s booming serve.
Coco Vandeweghe’s Edge (-360)
Vandweghe is one win away from back-to-back Wimbledon quarterfinals, and she’s done so in dominant fashion. She has yet to drop a set in three matches. Her last two wins over Timea Babos (6-2, 6-3) and No. 6 seed Roberta Vinci (6-3, 6-4) have been especially impressive. Vandeweghe is now 11-1 on grass this season.
The 24-year-old American is known for her excellent service game, and she’s lived up to that reputation thus far. She’s had some trouble putting her first serves in play (just 55 percent in the tournament), but when she has, she’s won 84 percent of those points, including a ridiculous 90 percent in her last two matches. Her return game has also been very solid. She has converted 10 of 17 (59 percent) break point opportunities.
Vandeweghe and Pavlyunchenkova have only met once in their career. Vandeweghe won that matchup at the Miami Masters back in 2014.
Writer’s Prediction: Vandeweghe (-360) overpowers Pavlyunchenkova to book a second-consecutive quarterfinal appearance at Wimbledon.
