Betting on the Arizona Diamondbacks (30-19)
The number four proved to be sweet for the Arizona Diamondbacks, who shutout the Milwaukee Brewers this Thursday, 4-0, for their fourth-consecutive win and to kick-off their four-game series in Wisconsin.
The Diamondbacks – winners of nine of their last 10 – kept their bats a-whopping with a couple of home runs courtesy of Gregor Blanco and Chris Ownings. Their main man in Paul Goldschmidt also hit a double for the second-straight game, extending his current hit streak to six games. The four-time All-Star has a total of 13 hits and 11 runs scored in his last 10 starts overall.
Arizona’s offense, which is currently the second-best in the majors in slugging percentage (.457), doesn’t seem like it’s going to lose power anytime soon, especially with three meetings left against the reeling Brewers. The team’s firepower is also being complemented with fantastic pitching, as it also currently owns the second-best run differential in MLB at plus-58.
Looking to keep the D-backs on a tear this Friday is Zack Godley (1-1, 2.45 ERA), who’ll make his fifth start of the season. Over his last two starts, Godley notched a winning decision and posted a superb 1.42 ERA with seven strikeouts in 12 innings of action. Having said that, expect the third-year righty to have another sound performance facing a suddenly short-handed Milwaukee lineup.
Betting on the Milwaukee Brewers (25-22)
Headed in the opposite direction as the D-backs are the Milwaukee Brewers, who suffered their season-worst fourth-straight loss on Thursday and are now half-a-game behind the Chicago Cubs for the NL Central lead.
The Brewers haven’t been the same since their supposed game against the Cubs on May 20th was postponed. They actually had a four-game win streak in tow prior to that missed contest, but have been outscored by their opposition 29-13 in the four games since.
A huge reason for their woes is the sudden slump that first baseman Eric Thames is in. Thames, who is currently tied for third in the National League with 13 homers, has not gone yard in his last 11 starts. The former KBO League superstar has also gone 2-for-16 at the plate since coming back from a three-game absence dealing with a strep throat.
To make matters worse for Milwaukee, stalwart outfielder Ryan Braun experienced thightness in his left calf during Thursday’s loss and is expected to be headed back to the disabled list. Likely joining Braun in the DL will be starting catcher Manny Pina, who was struck by a Robbie Ray fastball on his left elbow in the second inning and failed to make a return behind home plate that night.
A tall order is at hand now for Junior Guerra (0-0, 6.00 ERA) to make up for the Brewers’ ravaged batting order. Guerra’s making his first start this Friday coming from a seven-week absence after straining his own calf on Opening Day.
We’ve yet to find out if the Venezuelan righty can get regain his stellar form from his 2016 campaign, wherein he finished with 100 strikeouts and a respectable 2.81 ERA in 20 starts for Milwaukee. However, perhaps even Guerra cannot save the Brewers from another letdown this Friday with their offense in shambles.
