Betting on the Atlanta Braves (13-21)
The Braves returned to the losing column on Sunday with the 3-1 loss to the Miami Marlins. It was their ninth loss in 12 games, and it halted a two-game winning streak, where they appeared to be building some rhythm.
Despite the good production from Freddie Freeman, Matt Kemp, and Ender Inciarte, among others, rhythm is something that’s lost on the Braves for some time now. They could be in for another dismal year, with their current stats being indicative, as they are in the bottom 10 in runs, hits, and RBIs.
This upcoming four-game series with the Blue Jays will be their first matchup since the 2015 season. The Braves went 3-3 in those meetings, but were outscored by nine runs (31-22).
Veteran and fan favorite Bartolo Colon (1-4, 7.22 ERA) is getting the nod to start. Though he’s lining up opposite the American League-East’s last placers, it will be hard to expect a good stat line since Toronto has been on a roll lately. The 43-year-old is 44-34 in his last three seasons, but his ERA during that span is at the awful 3.90 mark.
Betting on the Toronto Blue Jays (16-21)
With the 3-2 win over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, the Blue Jays are continuing to rise from the ashes. Though they are still bottoming the AL-East, the division will have to watchout, as the ‘Jays have now won five straight and seven of their last nine, all while star slugger and 2015 AL MVP Josh Donaldson is sidelined with no timetable to return.
The team is 48-for-164 (.292) with nine home runs and 28 RBIs in their current winning streak, and among the key guys in the resurgence is Kevin Pillar. He’s step up really well in Donaldson’s absence, so much so that his current slash line of .314/.369/.497/.866 all contain career-highs and team-leading stats.
The sample size of Pillar’s career numbers with Colon is too little (2-for-2, one RBI), but considering his great momentum and the pitcher’s declining skills, we can expect another productive day from the veteran outfielder.
Over on defense, the spotlight will belong to probable starter Mike Bolsinger, who’s making his second appearance of the season. He earned a loss and a 3.18 ERA in his previous start (verus the Cleveland Indians), where he threw for 5.2 innings and gave up two runs on three hits and four walks, while striking out four.
Writer’s Prediction
The Blue Jays stretch the streak to six, 5-2.
