Betting on Benoit Paire (+105)
Benoit Paire barged into the quarterfinals of the 2017 Mercedes Cup with a comprehensive 6-2, 6-4 win over local favourite Peter Gojowczyk on Thursday. It was a fantastic performance by Paire who needed just 52 minutes to record the straight-sets victory. With the win, Paire recorded back-to-back victories in a grass court tournament for the first time since the 2013 Wimbledon Championships.
Waiting in the quarters for Paire is the talented Jerzy Janowicz. This will be the first meeting between Paire and Janowicz on grass. The Frenchman will be looking to reach his fourth ATP World Tour semifinal of 2017 after reaching the final four at Chennai, Montpellier and Marrakesh. For Paire to achieve that feat, he will need to continue his excellent play on the receiving end. Paire won 45 percent of his receiving points against Gojowczyk with the Frenchman converting each of his four break point chances.
Betting on Jerzy Janowicz (-135)
Upsets continued to rain down in the Mercedes Cup with Jerzy Janowicz delivering the latest shock result. Using his powerful serve, Janowicz ousted second seed Grigor Dimitrov, 7-6(4), 6-3, in a match that lasted one hour and 18 minutes. It was a huge win for Janowicz who picked up his first victory over a Top 15 player since March 2015, when he defeated Roberto Bautista Agut at the Miami Open.
Next up for Janowicz is a quarterfinal clash with Benoit Paire. Janowicz is 2-1 in his career against Paire with the Polish player winning each of their last two meetings. Janowicz has been on a tear since returning from a knee injury kast July, winning two titles on the ATP Challenge Tour. He’s also a big game player, taking a set off Novak Djokovic at last year’s US Open and pushing Marin Cilic to five sets at the Australian Open last January.
What makes Janowicz the favorite in this matchup, though, is his affinity with the grass courts. His most recent quarterfinal in the ATP World Tour also came on this surface at Halle in 2015. Janowicz also reached the semifinals at Wimbledon in 2013.
Writer’s Prediction
Janowicz (-135) eases past Paire in straight sets.
