Line: Arizona Cardinals (pk) at Oakland Raiders (pk); total 40.0 – view all NFL odds
[sc:NFL240banner ]The passing game takes center stage when the Arizona Cardinals roll into O.co Coliseum for their Week 3 matchup against the Oakland Raiders. The Cards’ starting quarterback Carson Palmer looked as sharp as he could be in Week 2, going 3 for 7 for 88 yards and a touchdown. He threw for a 57-yard gain to rookie wide receiver J.J. Nelson and made a 17-yard scoring pass to John Brown in his lone drive in the game.
The Raiders’ Derek Carr also had an excellent game last week, capped off with a 40-yard pass to first-round draft pick wide receiver Amari Cooper in the first quarter. With Carr and the Oakland offense looking to give Cooper plenty of playing time in the pros, expect the quarterback to repeatedly throw toward the rookie’s direction.
Oakland may have the edge at home though, especially with a tight pass rush featuring linebacker Khalil Mack. The Cards allowed six sacks in Week 2, two of which were suffered by Palmer.
Writer’s Prediction
Arizona remains winless in the preseason as the Raiders (pk) take the victory.
Chicago Cubs vs. Los Angeles Dodgers (8:00 PM ET)
Line: Chicago Cubs (-122) at Los Angeles Dodgers (+112); total 6.5 – view all MLB lines
While Palmer and Carr throw footballs all over O.co Coliseum, Jake Arrieta (16-6, 2.22 ERA) takes the mound at Dodger Stadium in an attempt to keep the Cubs on course for the MLB Playoffs. Arieta is on a five-start win streak, shutting out his opponents thrice over that span. He’s allowed no earned runs in four of his last five games. Chicago has won Arrieta’s last six road starts.
Arrieta’s last start at Dodger Stadium didn’t go so smoothly, allowing four earned runs on six hits over five innings of a loss in August 2013. Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez has hit .333 with a double, a homer and two RBI’s against the Chicago starter.
Los Angeles will need to get things done at the plate if they are to take a win at home. Starter Alex Wood (9-8, 3.70 ERA) has allowed the Cubs to hit .417 against him in his career. Wood has surrendered no more than three earned runs in his last four starts for the Dodgers, though.
Writer’s Prediction
The Cubs (-122) hammer Wood, while Arrieta tosses another gem for the victory.
