The NBA kicked off its new season yesterday but today is when the league goes full throttle with 14 games on tap. That includes a showdown between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center.

[sc:MLB240banner ]Another explosive pitching matchup is on tap tonight for Game 2 of the 2015 World Series. On the mound for the Mets is Jacob deGrom, who last pitched in Game 3 of the NLCS against the Chicago Cubs. In that game, deGrom allowed just two earned runs on four hits across seven inning of work in a 5-2 victory.
The Royals, on the other hand, will counter with Johnny Cueto. Unlike deGrom, Cueto is coming off a letdown performance, giving up eight earned runs in just two innings of Kansas City’s 11-8 loss to Toronto in Game 3 of the ALCS. deGrom is 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA in three starts this October, while Cueto is 1-1 with a 7.88 ERA in three starts also this month.
The Mets are 9-1 in deGrom’s last 10 road starts. The Royals are 3-0 in Cueto’s last three starts at home.l
Writer’s Prediction
Kansas City wins, 3-2
Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Los Angeles Lakers (8:07 PM ET)
Line: Minnesota Timberwolves (+3.5) vs. Los Angeles Lakers (-3.5); total; 202.5– view all NBA lines
Expect the Timberwolves to play inspired ball later tonight a few days after Flip Saunders’ demise. Minnesota finished dead last in the Western Conference last season with a 16-66 SU record, but with an interesting mix of young and veteran talent, head coach Sam Mitchell is expecting better from his team. Andrew Wiggins and prized rookie Karl-Anthony Towns are expected to lead the team, starting tonight against the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Lakers aren’t short of young guns as well, as they’ll parade a finally healthy Julius Randle and the guard combo of Jordan Clarkson and rookie D’Angelo Russell. But of course, the Lakers still belong to Kobe Bryant, who played just 35 games last season because of injuries. Minnesota is 6-4 ATS in its last 10 road games against the Lakers, while LA is 3-0 ATS in its last three versus the T’wolves.
Writer’s Prediction
Los Angeles (-3.5) wins, 103-98.
