San Francisco Giants vs. New York Yankees (1:05 PM ET)
Line: San Francisco Giants (+125) at New York Yankees (-135); total: 9.0 – view all MLB lines
The San Francisco Giants can’t wait to for their current road trip to end, as they’ve lost all six of their contests away from the Bay Area prior to Saturday’s narrow 2-1 victory over the New York Yankees.
The Giants will send Jeff Samardzija (9-5, 4.05 ERA) to the mound for the three-game series finale. Samardzija is coming off six days rest, but Sunday will be his first-career start in Yankee Stadium. He hasn’t fared well against the Bronx Bombers in general (6.92 ERA in three games against the Yanks), so the righty out of Notre Dame could be in for a rough afternoon.
Meanwhile, New York will counter with Nathan Eovaldi (8-6, 4.93 ERA), who is fresh off a nice winning start against the hard-hitting Baltimore Orioles last Tuesday. In that game, Eovaldi only struck out one batter, but did only allow four hits and one run in 5.1 innings of work. Having said that, it appears as if the Yankees have the slight pitching edge of the Giants this Sunday afternoon.
Writer’s Prediction
Yankees (-135) win a close one, 4-3.
New York Mets vs. Miami Marlins (1:10 PM ET)
Line: New York Mets (-128) at Miami Marlins (+118); total: 8.5 – view all MLB lines
If the New York Mets want to keep pace with the Miami Marlins for the final spot in the NL Wild Card race, they’ve got to get some form of consistency. They’ve alternated wins and losses for the past nine games now (with the total going under in eight occasions), with their latest outing being a humbling 7-2 defeat at the hands of the Marlins themselves.
Having Steven Matz (7-6, 3.56 ERA) on the mound for Sunday’s rubber match won’t be of much help for the Mets’ cause, though. Matz is 0-5 with an ERA of 4.73 over his last nine starts, with his last winning decision dating back to May 25. The 25-year-old lefty has also had it rough against the Marlins in his short career, going 0-2 in three career starts with a whopping 7.07 ERA.
Expect Miami’s batters to have their way against New York’s Matz this afternoon. This year’s Home Run Derby champ, Giancarlo Stanton, is 3-for-5 with a couple of dingers and four RBIs lifetime against Matz, with both of those homers all coming from this season alone.
Writer’s Prediction
The Marlins (+118) win, 6-2.
