New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles (7:05 PM ET)
Line: New York Yankees (-117) at Baltimore Orioles (+107); total 9.5 – view all MLB lines
The New York Yankees extended their winning streak to three games with a thrilling 7-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Monday. The Bronx Bombers flexed their offensive muscles in that win with Starlin Castro and Didi Gregorius both hitting two-run homers. The AL Wild Card leaders will look to keep the momentum going when they lock horns with the Orioles in the second game of their three-game set tonight.
Starting for New York this evening is CC Sabathia (11-5, 3.71 ERA). The lefty has pitched well in each of his past three starts, most recently limiting arch-rivals Boston to one run on four hits over six innings on August 31. Since returning from a right knee injury, Sabathia is 2-0 with a 1.89 ERA. The Orioles, on the other hand, will have Jeremy Hellickson (8-8, 5.15 ERA) as their starter tonight. He has struggled mightily for the O’s of late, recording an 8.82 ERA in his past three games. Hellickson surrendered seven earned runs in Thursday’s 11-8 loss to Toronto.
Writer’s Prediction
The Yankees (-117) win, 6-3.
Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates (7:05 PM ET)
Line: Chicago Cubs (-200) at Pittsburgh Pirates (+170); total: 8.5 – view all MLB lines
Things are going from bad to worse for the Chicago Cubs. Not only did they lose for the second consecutive game on Monday, they also lost starter Jake Arrieta for the foreseeable future with a hamstring injury. The Cubs will look to steady the ship when they face the Pirates in the second game of their four-game set tonight.
Tasked to stop the bleeding for the reigning World Series champs is starter Kyle Hendricks (6-4, 3.32 ERA). He has been superb since his activation from the DL, going 2-1 with a 2.31 ERA in his last eight starts. Opposing him this evening is Steven Brault (0-0, 5.93 ERA). He will be making his first Major League start of the season as he replaces the tiring Ivan Nova in the Bucs’ rotation. Brault, quite remarkably, is Pittsburgh’s first lefty starter this season.
Writer’s Prediction
The Cubs snap their losing skid with a 7-1 victory.
