There would be no lack of familiarity when Caroline Wozniacki and Angelique Kerber lock horns in the semis of the US Open. Both have met each other 12 times before with Kerber having the edge, 7-5. Wozniacki, however, is playing awesome tennis in the tournament. She is coming off a demolition job of Anastasija Sevastova in the quarters, winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. Furthermore, all five of Wozniacki’s wins against Kerber happened on hardcourts, the most recent being her 6-2 2-6 6-3 victory in the quarters last year in Tokyo. Kerber, on the other hand, blasted Roberta Vinci, 7-5, 6-0, in the previous round to reach the semis. She’s been hot of late when playing on hardcourts, having gone 14-2 in her last 16 matches on the said surface.

Writer’s Prediction

Wozniacki (+200) wins in three sets.

Novak Djokovic vs. Gael Monfils

Gael Monfils sure is cherishing the fact that he’s about to play in his first US Open semis after sending Lucas Pouille careening out of the tournament with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 win over countryman Lucas Pouille in the quarters. Monfils, however, will face next Novak Djokovic, two-time winner in Flushing Meadows. Monfils has been fantastic, as he has yet to lose a set thus far in the tournament. Despite that, Djokovic has played fewer sets than Monfils prior to the semis. That’s thanks to a walkover in the second round against Jiri Vesely and a retirement by Jo-Wilfred Tsonga in the quarters. A relatively fresher Djokovic poses a big problem for someone like Monfils, who trails the head-to-head matchup, 12-1.

Writer’s Prediction

Djokovic wins in four sets.
