The Red Sox are one of the hottest teams of late, not only in the American League but in the entire majors as well. And on the mound for them Wednesday night will be righty Nathan Eovaldi, who carries a 3-2 record to go with a 3.41 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. Eovaldi has been sensational of late for the Red Sox, as he’s allowed just a total of two earned runs on 11 hits while striking out 14 batters in his last 15 innings of mound duty, stretching across two games. In his last start, he silenced the Oakland A’s for six innings of a 7-2 road win over the weekend. Eovaldi has a career .363 wOBA and a 22.5 K% in his career against active Red Sox hitters. Driving Eovaldi’s confidence up is the Red Sox’s robust run support. In fact, Eovaldi and the rest of Boston’s pitching staff are fifth in the majors in terms of runs behind them per nine innings.
Betting on the Los Angeles Angels (+1.5)
Record: 27-28 Conference
With a new manager in the form of Phil Nevin, who takes over the gig after the team fired Joe Maddon, the Angeles will look to turn the corner amid a serious struggle on the field. Toeing the rubber for this matchup for the Halos will be lefty Reid Detmers, who looked good in his last start, albeit in a 2-1 loss to the New York Yankees on the road on Jun 2. In that game, Detmers held the big bats of the Yankees scoreless during the 4.1 innings that he was on the hill, issuing three free passes, allowing five hits, and fanning four. That performance lowered his ERA from 4.65 to 4.20, a trend he is looking to continue when he takes on the Red Sox. Although Mike Trout’s current struggles on the plate has been among the big stories on the side of the Angels, he could wake up and be THAT Mike Trout again when he sees Eovaldi this Wednesday. Trout is 6 of 17 with a pair of RBIs in his career versus the Red Sox pitcher.
Writer’s Prediction
The Red Sox win, 5-4.
