The New York Yankees’ (59-45) offense is just fine. Betting on the Boston Red Sox

[sc:MLB240banner ]It’s time for Henry Owens to realize his big league dreams. Owens is set to have his major league debut this coming Tuesday against Boston’s bitter rivals, the Yankees.

Across 21 starts this season at Triple-A Pawtucket, the 23-year-old lefty has accumulated a 3-8 record to go along with a 3.16 ERA. In his most recent outing, Owens pitched for six innings and allowed just one run on five hits to lead the Pawsox to a win over against Triple-A Norfolk.

Owens can’t afford to have a bad night at the Bronx on Tuesday, especially against the Yankees who are absolutely killing it on offense these days. In any case, the Red Sox’s hitters will have to find a way to get to Masahiro Tanaka. The current Red Sox lineup has a collective batting average of .290 against the Japanese hurler. Brock Holt is .286 (2-for-7) against Tanaka, while Mike Napoli is .500 (3-for-6) in the same matchup.

The over is 4-1 in Boston’s last five road games.

Betting on the New York Yankees

Masahiro Tanaka

The Yankees aren’t used to losing when Masahiro Tanaka is on the mound, but his last outing was different. Tanaka (7-4, 3.80 ERA) was out of sync in their 5-2 loss to Texas on July 29, as he gave up four earned runs, nine hits, and issued three walks in six innings of work. They had been 5-0 in Tanaka’s five starts prior to the loss.

That setback, however, can be considered as a minor one for Tanaka, who went 3-1 with a 3.67 ERA in five starts in July. If anything, Tanaka’s tendency to give up long balls is one cause of concern for the Yankees. Tanaka is giving up 1.54 homers nine innings, one of the highest this season among pitchers with at least 80 innings pitched in the majors.

Backing Tanaka is the Yankees’ decimating offense that has averaged 6.1 runs in the second half. Mark Teixeira, Didi Gregorious, and Chase Headley have all been hitting well after the midseason break. Teixeira has a slash line of .400/.492/.891 in the second half. Gregorious and Headley, meanwhile, are batting .370and .397, respectively, with a combined output of 26 RBIs since the All-Star break.

The Yankees are 6-1 in their last seven games against Boston.

Writer’s Prediction

New York wins, 6-4.
