Pitching Edge – Boston Red Sox (-105)
Pitching for the Yankees in the opening game of this three-game set is Michael Pineda (3-8, 5.38 ERA). He struggled mightily in his last start against the Chicago White Sox, coughing up five runs on five hits in six innings of action. Pineda’s ineffective performance was quite a shock considering he posted an impressive 2.75 ERA in the month of June.Meanwhile, the Red Sox will counter with Steven Wright (10-5, 2.68 ERA). The knuckleballer will look to build off an excellent first half, in which he gave up two earned runs or fewer in 11 of his 17 starts. Wright will fancy his chances of sustaining that terrific form tonight as he has fared extremely well at Yankee Stadium of late. He pitched a complete-game masterpiece against the Bronx Bombers on May 8 in this famous ballpark. Wright walked one and struck out seven in that 5-1 victory over the Yankees.
Batting Edge – Boston Red Sox (-105)
There’s no question that the Boston Red Sox hold the edge in the batting department for tonight’s ballgame. The Red Sox lead the majors in RBIs (467), hits (903), batting average (.292), runs scored (490) and on-base percentage (.359) this season. Compare that to the offensively challenged Yankees who have scored just 371 runs this season, ninth-lowest in the entire majors. To make matters worse for the Yankees, they will face the talented Steven Wright tonight. The Yanks’ leading hitters, Carlos Beltran and Mark Teixeira, are a combined 3-of-15 lifetime against Wright. Two of those three hits, though, were home runs.
Writer’s Prediction: Boston (-105) wins, 7-3.
