Betting on the BYU Cougars (+6)
BYU hasn’t faced the Spartans—ever. The Cougars would like to make a solid first impression to Michigan State this Saturday, when they make their way to East Lansing looking to win back to back.
The Cougars emerged the winners of a high-scoring affair against Toledo last Saturday, 55-53, to stop a three-game skid.
Jamaal Williams went full beastmode against Toledo, rushing for 286 yards and five touchdowns on 30 carries. Williams has feasted on opposing defenses this season with three games of at least 160 rushing yards. He might run into some problems against Michigan State, which allows just 3.1 yards per carry. The Spartans, however, are missing some pieces on their defense so expect Williams to take his chances especially early in the game.
In any case, BYU quarterback Taysom Hill and the team’s passing game has to click in order to keep Michigan State from solely focusing on Williams. Hill was effective versus Toledo, passing for 248 yards and a touchdown on 11 of 21 completions.
BYU is 3-0 ATS in its last three games as the road team.
Betting on the Michigan State Spartans (-6)
While BYU recently ended a three-game slide, the Spartans on the other hand are looking to avoid suffering one. After opening the season with two straight wins, the Spartans proceeded to lose their next two assignments, the latest being a disappointing 24-21 loss to Indiana last week.
Michigan’s usually stout defense was put to shame by the Hoosiers, who gutted the Spartans for 437 total yards. Perhaps the most glaring stat for the Spartans in that game was the 11 penalties they committed that resulted to a loss of 98 yards. But at least that issue can easily be addressed by just being more disciplined on the field, something they need to keep in mind against the rejuvenated Cougars side.
The offense, meanwhile, is optimistic of its chances this Saturday. For one, BYU’s pass defense is ranked among the worst in the nation, allowing a dizzying 310.2 passing yards per game. Spartans quarterback Tyler O’Connor will be pleased to hear that, as he tries to orchestrate Michigan State’s passing attack that ranks averages 236.0 yards per contest.
