Betting on the Charlotte 49ers (0-1)

Point Spread: +36.5

Charlotte opened its 2016-17 schedule getting blown to smithereens by Louisville in a 70-14 loss. The 49ers made sure they won’t be annihilated that much, as they lost by a much smaller margin to the Eastern Michigan Eagles last Friday, 24-7.

Still, scoring just seven points and seeing your quarterback turn to a bust in the passing game wasn’t exactly the kind of opener Charlotte head coach Brad Lambert had in his mind prior to the Michigan Eagles contest.

Charlotte starting quarterback Hasaan Klugh looked lost in throwing the rock, completing just 12 of 28 passes for 114 passing yards and a touchdown against two interceptions. He did fare better with on the ground attack, as he run for 101 rushing yards in 14 carries. There has to be some kind of improvement in the passing game moving forward, however, as the 49ers can’t show up in Manhattan this Saturday brining only Klugh’s legs.

On the other side of the ball, the 49ers’ secondary has to be ready for deep throws from Kansas State’s Jesse Ertz based on how Ertz slung the ball against Central Arkansas last Saturday. Ertz had an average of 20.8 yards per pass completion in that game. Junior defensive back recorded the 49ers’ only interception against the Eagles.

Betting on the Kansas State Wildcats (1-0)

Point Spread: –36.5

Talented pass rusher Jordan Willis, who had 11.5 sacks last year, was lost over the offseason, but it didn’t make Kansas State’s defensive fangs look any less sharp at least during the team’s 55-19 win over the Central Arkansas Bears to open the season.

Four different defensive Wildcats defensive studs recorded a sack each, making any planning by Charlotte to rev up its passing attack look like a futile practice. If the 49ers decide to go all out on the ground, they should know that Kansas State was tops last season in the Big 12 in run defense with only 115 rushing yards allowed per contest. That said, the Bears had 223 rushing yards dumped on Kansas State, so improvements will have to be seen from the Wildcats in this area.

As mentioned, quarterback Jesse Ertz had a big game against Central Arkansas, as he collected 333 passing yards and four touchdowns despite throwing the ball just 16 times, completing 10 of them.

The rushing part of their offense appeared fine, too, as the Wildcats racked up 186 yards on the ground with three different players getting at least 33 rushing yards.

Writer’s Prediction

Kansas State (-36.5) gets a comfortable, 44-14 win.
