Betting on the Chicago Cubs (odds)
Regular Season Record: 35-57
The Cubs are way behind the race to the top of the National League Central division, as they hit the midseason break behind by 14.5 games in the group. They have also lost four of their last five games, though the Cubs at least won the final game on their first-half schedule, defeating the New York Mets, 3-2 at home on July 17. On the mound of the Cubs this Friday will be Justin Steele, who carries a 3-6 record and a 4.15 ERA. He’s fared a lot better in his last five starts, however, as he’s gone 2-1 with a 3.81 ERA with 29 strikeouts in that stretch. The Cubs aren’t producing a lot of runs, but they know how to reach bases, as they are 10th in the majors with a .319 on-base percentage with a middling .244 batting average – good for 15th in the big leagues.
Betting on the Philadelphia Phillies (odds)
Regular Season Record: 49-43
The Phillies are looking decent at the end of the first half of the season as they are third in the NL East division. They have also won all their last three outings, thanks to a three-game sweep of the Miami Marlins down in Florida just before the 2022 MLB All-Star break. Their offense has been doing the heavy lifting so far this season, as they arrive at the 2022 MLB All-Star Game ranked 13th in batting average (.246) and sixth total runs (431). Kyle Gibsonb takes the mound for the Phillies in this matchup against the Cubs, and he’s got a 5-3 record and a 4.35 ERA. He is 4-1 in home starts this season, though. Kyle Schwarberand Rhys Hoskins headline the run support system of the Phillies after posting .820 OPS and .816 OPS in the first half, respectively, while combining for 48 home runs and 102 RBIs.
Writer’s Prediction
The Phillies win, 7-3.
