Betting on Chile (-337)
Chile moved ever closer to securing a spot in the final four with a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Germany at Kazan Arena on Thursday. Alexis Sanchez scored the opener for La Roja, capitalizing on a mistake by Arsenal team-mate Shkodran Mustafi. The Germans, however, equalized shortly before the break with a close-range strike by Lars Stindl. As a result of that draw, Chile remained tied with Germany for first place in Group B with four points to their name.
A victory would have put Chile through to the knockout stages but they were left with work to do to get out of their group after failing to convert numerous chances against a young German side. Sanchez’s low drive was spectacularly saved by Marc-André ter Stegen just before the interval. Sanchez has been a delight in this tournament, already recording a goal and two assists in his first two matches.
Chile will need the Gunners star’s pace and guile this coming Sunday for La Roja to grab the necessary result against Australia. They just need a draw against the Socceroos to advance. Even a one-goal defeat will do for manager Juan Antonio Pizzi’s men. Chile will fancy their chances of grabbing the victory against Australia as they have fared extremely well against the Socceroos of late. La Roja are unbeaten in their last three meetings against Australia (2 wins and 1 draw). Their most recent meeting came in the group phase of the 2014 World Cup with Chile emerging 3-1 victors. Sanchez also opened the scoring in that encounter.
Betting on Australia (+600)
Australia’s title hopes took a huge hit on Thursday as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Cameroon. The Africans took the lead in first-half stoppage time before Mark Milligan equalized with a well-taken penalty. The Socceroos now head to Moscow with the goal of upsetting the South American champions. Australia need to beat Chile by two clear goals for them to advance to the knockout stage.
That will be easier said than done, though, considering Chile is the fourth-ranked team in the world. The Socceroos are more than capable of springing the upset, however, because of their new attacking philosophy. The Aussies are trying to move away from a traditionally physical style of play to a more sophisticated approach under new manager Ange Postecoglou.
That technical brand of football was there for all to see in the game against Cameroon where Australia controlled 54 percent of the possession. The next step for the Aussies is converting that possession to clear-cut chances. They only managed just five shot attempts against Cameroon on Thursday. The Socceroos need to be more aggressive against Chile for them to achieve the necessary two-goal win.
Writer’s Prediction
Chile (-337) storm into the semis with a comfortable 3-1 win.
