Betting on the Cincinnati Reds (+170)
Dan Straily (14-8, 3.74 ERA) has been fantastic overall this season, and a win tonight for him and the Cincinnati Reds would fittingly put the exclamation point to his incredible year. It’s going to be easier said than done against a playoffs-seeking Cardinals squad, but things should fold towards his favor since he does carry a career 2.45 ERA in this particular matchup.
Furthermore, the 27-year-old righty’s on a good run right now. He’s yielded no more than three runs in his last five starts and is looking to extend his winning streak to four games. Straily, however, has had most of his struggles away from home—a perfect explanation for his high ERA of 4.71 on the road this season.
Over at the plate, watch out for the pair of Joey Votto and Adam Duvall to continue making noise. The former’s gone 5-of-14 with three RBIS, two homers and a double in the first three games of this series, while Duvall’s 6-of-14 with seven runs batted in, two homers and one trip in the same stretch.
Cincy is 5-5 SU in its previous 10 road games.
Betting on the St. Louis Cardinals (-200)
The St. Louis Cardinals are in a tight race with the Mets and Giants for the two wildcard spots in the National League. The Cards are currently in the tougher situation, being two games short for the aforementioned spots. Tonight is definitely a must-win for them.
Alex Reyes (4-1, 1.58 ERA) is going to take the mound for St. Louis. He logged in five innings of three-run ball, and got his third-consecutive win in his last start on Saturday versus the Cubs. And prior to that start, Reyes was actually even more lethal in his previous two, one of which was a shutout performance against San Francisco. Can he keep it going in just his second career start versus the Reds? Probably.
Meanwhile, the offense needs to pick it up again. The Cards’ have already been held to two runs or less twice in the previous three games. Matt Carpenter, Jhonny Peralta and Randal Grichuk, all of whom blasted one homer each in the second meeting, better re-light some fireworks at the plate later.
St. Louis is 4-6 SU in its past 10 home games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Cards (-200) receive a big boost on offense to beat the Reds, 9-4.
