Betting on the Cleveland Browns (+10)
On Sunday, the Cleveland Browns lost another game in typical Browns fashion. They shockingly led 20-0 in the first half, only for the Baltimore Ravens to storm back with 25 straight points and prevail with the victory.Cleveland’s dismal defeat had its bright spots, though. Quarterback Josh McCown, who’s pretty much locked in as the team’s starter moving forward after Robert Griffin III suffered yet another serious injury in Week 1, played much better than the fragile QB he took over for. McCown went 20-for-33 for 260 passing yards and two touchdowns, showing some of that luster that he had the previous season. Running back Isaiah Crowell also had a good day on the ground, running for 133 yards and a TD.
On the other hand, the Browns’ ineptitude to play disciplined football had them biting their own tails again. McCown threw two picks in the loss, and he was also a culprit to one of his team’s three fumbles during the game. Furthermore, Cleveland committed eight penalties – four of them crucial ones in the fourth quarter – for 59 yards as well. Those mistakes collectively ended up being the team’s undoing as we have often witnessed in the past.
To cap it all off, the Browns have lost six-straight road contests (1-5 ATS) dating back to last season. That does not bode well at all for the boys from the Dawg Pound in Week 3, even against the equally-disappointing Dolphins.
Betting on the Miami Dolphins (-10)
Contrary to the Browns’ epic collapse, the Miami Dolphins found themselves on the opposite side of the spectrum, as they attempted to dig out of a huge hole against the New England Patriots on Sunday but failed to seal the massive come-from-behind victory. The Dolphins trailed by as much as 24 points in the first half, but an ill-timed injury to New England QB Jimmy Garoppolo before halftime sparked their comeback.
In the end, though, Ryan Tannehill’s last-minute interception in the end zone ended Miami’s game-tying drive to fall to the Pats in Foxborough (31-24) for the ninth-straight time. Still, the highly-criticized QB actually had a pretty solid afternoon in the air to give the South Beach faithful a ton of optimism in Week 3’s matchup against the Browns. Tannehill racked up 389 passing yards for a pair of touchdowns, including going a stellar 20-for-21 to start the second-half rally.
However, there were still more lowlights than highlights for Miami in Sunday’s loss. The team’s running game is still atrocious, with oft-injured workhorse Arian Foster suffering yet another groin injury just two weeks into the new season, and with his backup, Jay Ajayi, getting only five carries for 14 rushing yards while also losing a fumble.
All things considered, and despite of the their close-call frustrations for the first couple of games, the Fins have certainly hung tough with playoff contenders New England and Seattle. They’ve lost both contests by just a single possession, including limiting the supposedly potent offense of the Seahawks to just 16 points in Week 1. And when you compare the Browns’ woes on the road mentioned earlier, Miami’s mediocre 3-3 home record (2-4 ATS) doesn’t seem as bad as it really is.
Writer’s Prediction
The Dolphins (-10) win their home opener over the dysfunctional Browns, 29-13.
