Betting on the Cleveland Cavaliers (-12)

On Friday, the Cleveland Cavaliers continued their tear through the regular season by winning their third-straight contest and making the struggling Dallas Mavericks look foolish with a 128-90 rout.

Cleveland, a team known in previous seasons for its defense, is now scorching hot on offense as well. The second-highest scoring team in the league (112 points per game) is giving the Warriors a run for their money from downtown by becoming the first team in NBA history to make 20 three-pointers in back-to-back games. In addition, the Cavs have made at least 10 shots from beyond the arc in each of their games this entire season.

Kevin Love stayed en fuego after his 34-point first-quarter outing against the Blazers on Wednesday by putting up 27 points and seven three-pointers versus the Mavs on Friday. Even Kyrie Irving is getting in on the act, as he’s gone 7-of-11 from deep in the past two games and is shooting 59 percent from the floor over the last five.

And let’s not forget about LeBron James, who has been the key cog of Cleveland’s offense by pitching in 50 points and 24 assists over the last couple of contests.

We don’t expect the Cavs to flame out just yet, especially against a young Sixers team this Sunday and with wins in six of their last seven road games (5-2 ATS).

Betting on the Philadelphia 76ers (+12)

The growing pains continue for the Philadelphia 76ers, who have now dropped to 4-12 for the season after being blown out by the Chicago Bulls on Friday, 105-89. It was Philadelphia’s second-consecutive game that it has failed to put up triple-digit scoring as well.

Part of the problem for the Sixers is that their coveted big man, Joel Embiid, is still being limited with his playing time. “The Process” took a scheduled day off against the Bulls and did not play in the second overtime of Wednesday’s contest against the Grizzlies, which naturally led to another defeat. Embiid needs the go-signal from head coach Brett Brown to put the pedal to the metal on Friday, as he had 25 points of his own in the heartbreaking 102-101 loss to the Cavs back in November 5.

Simply put, the Sixers are in disarray when Embiid is not on the floor. Their other start player, Jahlil Okafor, is being restricted in minutes himself and managed to tally just 10 points and six boards on Friday. Even Philly’s other touted forward, rookie Dario Saric, has gone cold from the floor with just three made field goals in 16 attempts over the past three games.

While the narrow loss against Cleveland earlier this month shows promise that the Sixers can probably hang with the East’s best team on Sunday, the fact remains that they’ve lost seven-consecutive meetings against the Cavs. However, there’s still a silver lining for Philadelphia’s backers amongst us bettors, as the team has strangely gone a superb 6-1 against the spread in those contests.

Writer’s Prediction

This time around, the Cavaliers (-12) convincingly dispatch the 76ers, 118-93.
