Betting on the Cleveland Indians (17-13)
Cleveland has three wins in its last four games, but that run is going to be on the line at the hands of Trevor Bauer (2-3, 7.67 ERA) who is coming off a forgettable effort in his last start.
The UCLA product lasted for just four innings after yielding seven earned runs, including one homer, on May 1 at Detroit. Prior to that, he was also blamed for four earned runs—with two homers—against Houston at home.
If Bauer doesn’t play any better here, the Indians need to make up for it at the plate. Jose Ramirez has had a hit in all but three of his last 10 games while continuing to lead the team in batting (.300), RBIs (23), OBP (.378) and total hits (33).
Meanwhile, Edwin Encarnacion, who’s on a three-game hitting streak, is making his return to Toronto for the first time since signing with the Indians in the offseason.
Betting on the Toronto Blue Jays (11-20)
The Blue Jays are on a mini tear of their own, winning two of their last three games. However, the offense has been an issue for the team this season. They rank 23rd overall in runs per game (3.87) and, clearly, have missed the services of Josh Donaldson (calf).
Fortunately, the rise of Kevin Pillar has lessened the blow of Donaldson’s absence. Pillar finished the month of April with a .301/.339/.505 triple-slash line, including four home runs, eight RBIs and 13 runs. He’s stayed hot through six games in May, going 7-for-22 with a pair of doubles.
On the mound, Toronto counters with Marcus Stroman (2-2, 3.89 ERA). He was limited to three innings in his last start because of arm problems. Before that start though, the righty pitched seven innings of two-run ball with a season-high 10 strikeouts against Tampa Bay on Apr. 28.
Writer’s Prediction
Toronto (-115) wins it, 4-3.
