2016 Season Recap
Haters will say that the 2016 Cowboys were exactly what they thought Dallas was: a big playoff loser. What they won’t admit, however, is that the Cowboys exceeded expectations for a team that had two rookie starters as quarterback and running back. Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott were sensational in 2016 in leading the Cowboys to a 13-3 record, let alone a postseason berth.
Losing Tony Romo early in the season gave way to so many skeptics but Prescott proved he’s ready to become the next franchise quarterback for Dallas. Elliott, on the other hand, led the league in rushing yards. Although they bombed out of the playoffs, the Cowboys are starting at a bright future ahead with those two young studs acting as anchors of the team moving forward.
Top Free Agency Needs
Upgrading the pass rushing unit is high on the priority list of Dallas. There’ll be some great free agent options to target soon so expect the Cowboys to be in play for those key names. Also, Jerry Jones may want to decide soon what to do with Tony Romo. Obviously, the time is now for Prescott and Romo has long accepted the truth that he’ll never regain the starting job again so long as Prescott’s healthy. Releasing Romo will get the Cowboys $14 million worth of cap space they could spend on luring defensive pieces this offseason.
Top Draft Needs
Defensive End. Randy Gregory is talented but his skills set obviously doesn’t include the ability to stay away from illegal substances. As mentioned earlier, the Cowboys have to shore up their pass rush and Gregory doesn’t seem committed into playing a key role in that area.
Cornerback. The importance of this position in the draft partially depends on whether Morris Clairborne would stay or leave for free agency.
Wide Receiver. Dez Bryant is still the top dog downfield, but what about depth? Terrence Williams was good but not great as the second option, and his contract is about to expire.
