Betting on the Dallas Cowboys (-3)
The Dallas Cowboys (11-1) just keep on winning. Their franchise-best winning streak is now up to 11 games after edging out the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday night. And with the Redskins’ loss, they have now become the first team this season to clinch a playoff spot.
They aren’t quite winning as dominantly as they were, though. After starting the season 9-1-1 ATS, they’ve gone 0-2 ATS because of back-to-back close games with the Redskins (31-26) and Vikings (17-15).
But despite already clinching a playoff spot, the Cowboys certainly won’t be short of motivation for their division matchup with the Giants. For one, they still need to secure the NFC East title, and they can effectively seal that by beating the second-place Giants. And of course, this will also be a revenge spot after New York dealt Dallas its one and only loss of the season back in Week 1.
A lot has changed for Dallas since that Week 1 game. Dak Prescott has grown immeasurably as a quarterback. Meanwhile, Ezekiel Elliott has emerged as one of, if not the best running back in the league. Elliott is the runaway league leader in rushing yards (1,285) and co-leader in rushing touchdowns (12). He will be eager to improve upon his first game against New York, where he rushed for a season-low 51 yards on 20 carries.
Elliott will get to face a Giants defensive line that will be a bit beat up. Defensive tackles Johnathan Hankins and Damon Harrison are both dealing with injuries, while pass-rusher Jason Pierre-Paul left their game against the Steelers with a groin injury.
Betting on the New York Giants (+3)
Contrary to past years, the New York Giants (8-4) have been heavily dependent on their defense for their success, while their offense has struggled. This was once again made apparent in their 24-14 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.
The defense, which is ranked inside the top 6 in both scoring defense and rushing defense, was able to limit the explosive Steelers offense to 5.6 yards per play and forced two turnovers. Unfortunately, the offense just couldn’t get anything going. The Giants were limited to just 234 yards of total offense, their second-lowest mark of the season.
Eli Manning had another rough outing as he went just 24-of-39 for 195 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also struggled against the lowly Cleveland Browns the week before.
You’d think the Giants offense should be able to bounce back from that putrid performance against a subpar Cowboys pass defense which was just torched by Kirk Cousins a couple of weeks ago. However, this offense is still pretty reliant on Odell Beckham Jr.’s brilliance, which is why he’ll need to come up big for the Giants to win.
Those big-time performances haven’t come very often against the Cowboys for some reason, though. OBJ had a pedestrian four catches for 73 yards in their Week 1 meeting this season, and was also limited to sub-50 yard games in three other games. He did have that one 10-catch, 146-yard game, which included “The Catch” during his rookie year, but that performance came in a losing effort.
It remains to be seen just how long the banged up Giants defense keep the Cowboys at bay, especially if the offense can’t extend drives and stay on the field.
Writer’s Prediction
The Giants offense lays another egg, as the Cowboys (-3) all but clinch the division with a 28-21 win.
