Betting on the Detroit Lions (+7)
Detroit had another game-winner in mind, but a late-game interception thrown by Matthew Stafford dashed the Lions’ hopes of going 2-0 to begin the season, as they fell to Tennessee on Sunday, 16-15.The Lions had a chance for a field-goal attempt but Stafford opted to throw the ball before Perrish Cox picked him off.
Penalties hurt the Lions, as they were charged with 17 for a loss of 138 yards and cost them three touchdowns that were waved off. Ironing out those errors, however, is at least an issue that can be easily resolved just in time for Detroit’s showdown with the Packers. The Lions’ offense appears to have enough weapons to rattle the Packers. Detroit is sixth in passing yards per game (285.0) and 10th in rushing yards (126.5).
Stafford had a hard time in the pocket against the Titans, passing for 260 yards (22 of 44 passing) with a touchdown and interception, while also taking three sacks. Detroit’s offensive line is due for another tough challenge in the form of Green Bay’s stout defense that already has seven sacks on the season.
Betting on the Green Bay Packers (-7)
Aaron Rodgers has fond memories of the last time he faced Detroit. He looks to add more to his bank of happy memories when up against the Lions this Sunday at home, where they are 9-1 SU and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games there against Detroit.
It was just last year when Rodgers and tight end Richard Rodgers hooked up for a game-winning Hail Mary play in a 27-23 at Detroit on December 3. Green Bay is hoping, however, that it can avoid being in a situation in which the Packers need yet another miraculous play to win the game. Protecting their quarterback better than they did in the 17-14 loss to Minnesota on Sunday is one way to do it.
Rodgers was constantly pressured in the pocket against the Vikings, as he was sacked five times for a loss of 33 yards. Overall he had 213 yards on 20 of 36 completions with a touchdown and an interception.
Eddie Lacy has to bring the heat versus Detroit to take some of the Lions’ attention away from Rodgers. Lacy produced just 50 rushing yards on 12 carries against the menacing Minnesota defense. He gets a tastier matchup this Sunday, as the Lions are 19th against the run, allowing 110.5 rushing yards per game.
On the flipside, the Lions may not cover as much ground as they are used to. Green Bay’s rushing defense is the best in the league so far this season, giving up just 39.0 rushing yards per game.
Writer’s Prediction
