Betting on Fernando Verdasco (+180)

Wimbledon-2016_250x130

Verdasco will come in to this match with a burning desire to end his losing skid to Tomic. See, Verdasco has dropped the last five matches against Tomic, who has a 5-1 advantage in their head-to-head series.

The Spaniard, though, isn’t having a good year thus far. While he has an 18-13 record in ATP tournaments, he only has a mediocre 4-5 record over his last 10 matches. In his most recent outing, Verdasco lost to Kevin Anderson in Nottingham earlier this month.

Verdasco was able to reel in a big fish in Stan Wawrinka at the ATP Aegon Championship also this June before falling to Tomic via a score of 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 4-6 in the second round of the tournament. Still, Verdasco remains a quality and dangerous first-round opponent for somebody like Tomic, who isn’t bad but isn’t great either.

Verdasco is also not new to success in Wimbledon having reached the quarterfinals of the 2013 edition of Wimbledon.

Betting on Bernard Tomic (-240)

Tomic is a -240 favorite to win this matchup against Verdasco. He has the number of the Verdasco, as suggested by the head-to-head record mentioned earlier. On top of those, Tomic is in a much better form entering Wimbledon with a 4-1 slate over his past five contests.

Verdasco could only reach the semifinals of his most recent event, the ATP Aegon Championship, no thanks to a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Milos Raonic.  In any case, Verdasco will have all the confidence coming into another meeting with Verdasco.

Tomic will look to take advantage of Verdasco’s apparent struggle on grass. Verdasco is just 2-2 on the surface in ATP matches thus far this year, while the Australian is 5-3. Moreover, Tomic has earned a grass court win over Verdasco before. That was at Queen’s Club earlier this year, where Tomic earned a 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-4 victory in the round of 16.

Like Verdasco, Tomic has experienced notable success at Wimbledon before. The 23-year-old Tomic managed to get to the quarterfinals in 2011 as a qualifier and followed that up with a fourth-round appearance the next year.
