Betting on the Florida Atlantic Owls (+11)

You could say that defense isn’t Florida Atlantic’s forte this year. The Owls, who lost 28-23 to Charlotte last Sunday, are just 111th in the nation in total defense with opponents skewering them for 37.2 points per game and 482.3 total yards.

In the loss to Charlotte, the Owls made the 49ers’ offense look like a well-oiled machine by allowing 442 total yards. That said, the Owls appear to still have a basic working knowledge on how to defend, as evidenced by the six sacks they’ve registered thus far this season. That’s tied for most in Conference USA.

Marshall’s offensive line isn’t that sturdy with 13.0 sacks allowed this season so the Owls is capable of hitting the Thundering Herd where it hurts most, as Marshall is among the best in the conference in passing offense with 263.2 passing yards per game.

Florida Atlantic is 2-2 ATS in its last four games when it was an underdog by at least eight points.

Betting on the Marshall Thundering Herd (-11)

Like Florida Atlantic, the Thundering Herd are a big embarrassment on defense. After losing to North Texas last Saturday, 38-21, Marshall’s scoring defense average tipped 41.0 points per game, 124th in the nation. Moreover, the Herd allow 485 yards per game, the worst mark in the conference.

With such a bad stop unit that is likely to find a fix within this season, the Herd will have to turn to their offense to carry them. Marshall is fifth in the league in scoring offense with 35.3 PPG. The Herd’s passing offense in particular has been relatively effective compared to most Conference USA’s teams, and ranks fifth in the conference.

Spearheading Marshall’s passing offense is quarterback Chase Litton, who passed for 258 yards to go with a TD and a pick on a poor 20-for-42 completions. That said, Litton is fourth in the conference with 305.0 passing yards per game with 13 touchdowns.

Marshall is 3-0 SU (1-2 ATS) in its last three meetings with Florida Atlantic.

Writer’s Prediction
