The Clemson Tigers (+200 to win the national title) will begin their defense of the crown they won by beating the Alabama Crimson Tide in the National Championship Game last season with a home matchup with the rebuilding Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (+200,000). Are the Tigers’ teeth still sharp enough to destroy Georgia Tech just like they did in 2018? Or will the Georgia Tech score an earth-shattering upset victory?

Betting on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (0-0 Overall / 0-0 Conference)
This is going to be an especially interesting season for the Yellow Jackets, particularly because the program is about to find out just what it is getting from first-year head coach Geoff Collins. After 11 seasons under Paul Johnson, the Yellow Jackets thrived in a system that prioritizes the option play on offense, resulting in a run-heavy attack that also ranked second in the nation last season with 315.5 rushing yards per contest. Collins wants a more pro-style offense for the Yellow Jackets, which means passing the ball more. To that end, Georgia Tech will heavily rely on the arms of senior quarterback Tyler Preone, who passed for 1,456 yards and only six touchdowns. Clemson’s defense is going to be a tough test for the Yellow Jackets, who are trying to set a new identity offensively. The backfield still matters for Georgia Tech, and it could definitely help the team bore a hole through Clemson’s stop unit because of its depth.
The Yellow Jackets are 5-5 against the spread (ATS) in their last five games.
Betting on the Clemson Tigers (0-0 Overall / 0-0 Conference)
Dabo Swinney and the Tigers must be very thankful that quarterback Trevor Lawrence decided to come back for at least one more season in Clemson. With Lawrence delaying his plans to turn pro in the NFL, the Tigers are assured of one thing: that they have the best quarterback in the nation entering the 2019 college football season. Last season, Lawrence guided the Tigers to a national title and finished the campaign with 3,280 passing yards and 30 touchdowns against just four interceptions. Facing the Yellow Jackets for the Tigers’ first game of the season should bring plenty of good memories for Lawrence and Clemson because they mauled Georgia Tech in a dominant 49-21 win in Atlanta last season. In that game, Lawrence tossed four touchdowns and finished with 176 passing yards on 13-for-18 pass completions. The Tigers defense also recorded four sacks. Clemson’s defense lost some talent over the offseason but it still has Christian Wilkins, Clelin Ferrell, Austin Bryant. What’s left of Clemson’s stop unit should be more than enough to give a rebuilding Yellow Jackets program plenty of trouble and headaches.
The Tigers are 3-0 ATS in their last three games.
Writer’s Prediction
Clemson wins, 45-20.
