Betting on Germany (+165)

The reigning world champs didn’t have the greatest performance in their opener against Australia. Germany’s defense was shaky as the Socceroos threw the kitchen sink against them in the second half. But despite these flaws, they still had more than enough quality to secure a thrilling 3-2 win on Monday. That’s quite astonishing considering Germany has the youngest squad in this year’s competition with an average of 24 years and four months.

Joachim Low has named seven uncapped players in his Confederations Cup squad after resting superstars Manuel Neuer, Mesut Ozil, Mats Hummels and Thomas Muller. Germany have an insane amount of depth, though, and that clearly showed in the win against Australia. Bayer Leverkusen’s Julian Brandt was the pick of the bunch in the group opener as he time and again dissected the hapless Australian defense. The 21-year-old was a vision in midfield as his run and pass set up Germany’s opening goal.

That being said, we can expect Low to ring the changes for Germany’s upcoming match against Chile. Their defense looked far from impressive in the win against Australia with goalkeeper Bernd Leno shouldering much of the blame. Low has already decided to drop Leno with Barcelona keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen getting the start against Chile. Low insists that the decision had been pre-planned but given Leno’s uneven performance against Australia, ter Stegen may get the starting gig for the rest of the tournament.

Betting on Chile (+144)

Chile’s Confederations Cup campaign is off to a great start after beating Cameroon, 2-0, at Otkrytiye Arena on Saturday. Alexis Sanchez came off the bench to deliver two late assists to send La Roja to the top of Group B. They will look to tighten their grip on the top spot when they face co-leaders Germany this coming Thursday. For Chile to record another victory, it’s paramount that they control the ball again against Germany. La Roja were able to control 62 percent of the possession in their opening match against Cameroon. That helped Chile establish a 16-8 edge in shot attempts and a 4-1 advantage in the shots on target department against the Cameroonians.

Apart from the aforementioned Sanchez, expected to play a vital role in Thursday’s clash is Arturo Vidal. He showed his worth in the win against Cameroon, heading in the match-winner in the 81st minute. The dynamic duo will look to dissect a Germany side that has conceded 19 goals in their nine previous matches at the Confederations Cup.
