Playing as the only undefeated team in the nation, the Bulldogs are continuing to wreck through whoever is in front of them. They easily dispatched Loyola Marymount on Thursday night, 90-60, led by Nigel Williams-Goss’s 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Gonzaga’s fourth-ranked defense was again on-point all throughout the contest, holding the Lions to a horrid 24-for-61 shooting. It was the 18th time this season that a team has failed to shoot better than 40 percent against the Zags.
What’s scarier is that they are just as good (if not better) on offense. In fact, they are the only team in the country to be rated in the top four in both offensive and defensive efficiency rankings. Additionally, they are 12th in points (85.4 PPG) and eighth in points allowed (61.7 PPG).
In their meeting with Saint Mary’s last January 14th, Gonzaga convincingly won, 79-56, and shot a season-high 64.7 percent from the floor.
We can expect more of the same this Saturday. Williams-Goss should be able to give another fine, player-of-the-game type of performance (15.6 PPG, 5.7 RPG, 4.8 APG, 1.7 SPG). He’s not top two in his team in points, rebounds, assists, and steals for nothing.
The Bulldogs are 11-0 on the road this season (8-2-1 ATS).
Betting on the Saint Mary’s Gaels (22-2, 11-1 WCC)
Point Spread: ALL LINES HERE
It’s been a heck of a season so far for the 20th-ranked Saint Mary’s. They are enjoying one of their better starts in a while, and they have also won seven straight games, highlighted by the 71-27 laugher against San Diego last week.
Three guys are leading the team to where they are now – Jock Landale (16.9 PPG, 9.5 RPG, 1.2 BPG), Calvin Hermanson (13 PPG), and Emmett Naar (10.1 PPG, 5.6 APG) – but Landale is providing the most damage, as he is pacing the Gaels in points, rebounds, and blocks, while also making over 60 percent of his shots.
Through those guys’ production, Saint Mary’s is 13th in Kenpom.com’s offensive rankings.
The problem, however, is that they are battling Gonzaga next – owners of the best record in college basketball and a team that pummeled them just weeks ago. In the matchup, not only did they got routed by 23, they were also held to 39.7 percent shooting – their third-worst field goal percentage all season.
Landale and Hermansson were the only players for the Gaels to tally double digit points during the contest, and they combined for a quiet 9-for-20 shooting.
Saint Mary’s is 14-1 at home this season (9-6 ATS).
Writer’s Prediction
