Betting on the Green Bay Packers (-2.5)
Is it time for Green Bay to push the panic button? Not yet, but the Packers need to get it together before their chances of making it to the playoffs completely slip away. The Packers, who are coming off a 31-26 loss to Indianapolis, will look to snap a two-game skid when they take on Tennessee on the road this coming Sunday.
Despite the struggles of Green Bay, Aaron Rodgers remains fantastic playing his role under center. Rodgers, who went 26-for-43 for 297 passing yards and three touchdowns with an interception in the loss to the Colts, has been carrying the bulk of Green Bay’s offense that ranks 11th in scoring with 24.6 points per game. That’s especially true now that Eddie Lacy is out with an ankle injury.
With an in-the-zone Jordy Nelson and a progressing Davante Adams as targets, Rodgers should be able to exploit holes on Tennessee’s defense that ranks just 20th against the pass. Nelson has 188 receiving yards and two touchdowns over the last two games, while Adams is currently the team’s leader in receiving yards with 424 to go with five touchdowns on the season.
On defense, the Packers’ top-rated run defense will be put on an acid test by DeMarco Murray and company. Green Bay allows the fewest rushing yards per game (74.4).
The Packers are 6-4 ATS in their last 10 road games.
Betting on the Tennessee Titans (+2.5)
Marcus Mariota went from hero to zero in a 43-35 loss to San Diego on Sunday, no thanks to a pair of crucial errors in the second half. While Mariota threw for 313 yards and three touchdowns on 27 of 43 completions, he did pick up three interceptions and lost a fumble that hurt the Titans’ chances of completing a comeback.
The Titans can’t afford to be turnover happy next time against a team like Green Bay. Giving Aaron Rodgers bonus time to work on offense is just not the kind of sight the Titans would like to see.
The three touchdowns Mariota threw against the Chargers all came inside the red zone, where the Titans have been efficient this season. In fact, they are eighth in the league in red zone touchdowns with 2.2 per contest. Mariota could be weaving his red zone magic again against a Green Bay defense that has allowed opponents to score touchdowns at a 62.50 percent rate over the past three games.
DeMarco Murray will have a big target on his back, especially with Green Bay’s tough run defense focused on keeping him in check. Nevertheless, the Titans are among the few teams capable of challenging Green Bay on the ground, as they are third in the league with 152.2 rushing yards per game.
The over is 3-0 in the Titans’ last three home games.
Writer’s Prediction
Green Bay (-2.5) wins, 27-23.
