Heisman Trophy Odds Update – November 23, 2016

Unless Lamar Jackson does something incredibly stupid like hitting a blunt in the middle of the game or something catastrophic, one that’s beyond our imagination, happens this week, expect the Heisman Trophy to be awarded to the Louisville signal-caller. But who knows, right? Let’s now check out how the race has shaped up recently.

Lamar Jackson, QB Louisville (-5000)

Lamar Jackson is a lot of things but among those that he’s not is being perfect. The Louisville quarterback has a strong grip of the Heisman for some time now and that continues to be the case but to a lesser degree following a humbling performance in the Cardinals’ 36-10 loss to Houston last week in which Jackson completed just 20 of 43 passes for 211 yards while rushing for a mere 33 on 25 carries.

Looking from a different angle though, one could argue that Jackson’s struggles in that game magnified just how fantastic he really has been this season. Jackson was sacked 11 times by Houston and five in a previous contest against Wake Forest. Jackson having a blast this season despite playing behind that bad offensive line speaks volumes about his god-like capabilities on the field.

The others

It may be too late for the other contenders to catch Jackson in the Heisman race but it’s not bad to check on them either. Baker Mayfield, for one, is having quite a season, leading the nation in passer rating (194.70) and is currently seventh in passing yards (3,381) and fourth in passing touchdowns (35).

He wasn’t able to gain that much traction this past week, though, as he threw for just 169 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in an easy 56-28 win over No. 14 West Virginia. Texas running back D’Onta Foreman, meanwhile, had a solid day in Lexington last Saturday, albeit in a 24-21 shock overtime loss to Kansas on Saturday. With 250 rushing yards and a pair of rushing scores against the Jayhawks, Foreman added to his FBS-leading numbers of 1,863 rushing yards and 186.30 per game.

Foreman can be overlooked at times considering how inconsistent Texas had gone this season but his numbers definitely deserves at least a look from the Heisman committee.
