Three Reasons Why Jason Day Will Win the 2016 British Open
He’s not No. 1 in the World for Nothing
The headline above already says it all. Jason Day, who currently leads the PGA Tour with three wins this season, is the best golfer right now in the world and no one can take away that title from him (for now). The American has been on an unstoppable rampage since last year’s U.S. Open, piling up seven wins and eighteen T12 finishes in the last 22 events that he’s joined. And having all of those said, it’s no wonder that Day is currently the top favorite (+750) to hoist the Claret Jug this year. This is Where it All Began
It was during last year’s edition of the British Open when we saw the beginning of the eventual rise of Jason Day. He couldn’t bring home the Claret Jug at that time, but he did put on one hell of an effort which helped him earn a solid T4 finish.
From that point on, the 28-year-old Australian turned on the ignition by going on a dominant run in the succeeding tournaments, including his first career major championship at Whistling Straits and wins in The Barclays and BMW Championship. The latter victory, in particular, allowed him to finally earn him the status of being ranked No. 1 in the world for the first time ever.
It would definitely be very fitting to see Day notch his second career major win this week at The Open, the event where his ascension to supremacy started.
Hungry for Redemption
Anyone would usually prefer to head into a big tournament with momentum on their side. But that does not totally apply to Jason Day, who will enter Royal Troon coming off a surprising meltdown in the WGC Bridgestone Invitational two weeks ago.
In that particular event, the Australian was in the lead throughout the most part but eventually collapsed down the stretch. A final round of 2-over 72 placed him in a tie for third and three shots behind eventual champion Dustin Johnson. That sorry loss should make Day even more motivated to win it all in this week’s British Open.
Writer’s Prediction
Day (+750) wins it all at Royal Troon.
