Betting on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (-240)
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga barged into the third round of the 2017 Wimbledon Championships with a comprehensive 6-1, 7-5, 6-2 win over qualifier Simone Bolelli on Wednesday. It was a fantastic performance from the Frenchman who needed just one hour and 54 minutes to record the straight sets win.
Tsonga, who recorded his 30th Wimbledon match win, blasted 32 winners and won 84 percent of his first serve points against Bolelli. What proved to be the difference in the contest, though, was his exquisite return. Tsonga won 48 percent of his receiving points against the Italian with the World No. 10 converting five of his 13 break point opportunities.
Next up for Tsonga is a round-of-32 clash with Sam Querrey. The 32-year-old will fancy his chances against the American as he has won four of his five previous matches against Querrey. One of those victories came at the All England Club in 2014. Tsonga won that Wimbledon second-round encounter in a five-set thriller, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-7 (4), 6-3, 14-12.
For Tsonga to extend his dominance against Querrey, he needs to bring his aggressive style and continue his strong net play in the third round. He won 17 of his 20 net points against Bolelli in the second round. Tsonga has won 78 percent (35-of-45) of his total net points in the entire tournament thus far. Tsonga also smashed 13 aces in that round-of-64 win.
Betting on Sam Querrey (+180)
Sam Querrey booked a place in the third round of the 2017 Wimbledon Championships with a gritty 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Nikoloz Basilashvili on Wednesday. This is the third time in his career that Querrey has reached the round of 32 at the All England Club. Things are bound to get tougher, though, for the American as he will next face the in-form Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The Frenchman has yet to drop a set in this Grand Slam tournament.
For Querrey to grab the upset, the Bay Area native needs to dominate with his service game. Querrey’s serve was solid against Basilashvili as he converted 67 percent of his first serves. Querrey took full advantage of that fact, winning 53 of his 62 first serve points for an incredible 85 percent clip. Querrey also needs to continue his excellent net play if he is to defeat Tsonga. He won all of his 11 net points against Basilashvili in the round of 64.
Writer’s Prediction
Tsonga (-240) edges past Querrey in four tough sets.
