Betting on the Kansas City Royals
Kansas City’s hopes of joining the postseason is in big peril but the Royals have no choice but to keep on trying. With Edinson Volquez getting the start today, the Royals will have a pitcher who’s gone 0-1 with a 7.56 ERA in his past five starts.
That’s not exactly a comforting thing to hear for the Royals, who are pressed to produce at the plate early with Volquez pitching so inconsistently. Facing Tigers lefty Matt Boyd, however, could spark KC’s offense. For one, the Royals, as a team, have a career batting average of .342 against Boyd.
Among them is Kendrys Morales, who seems to have Boyd’s number, hitting 8-for-11 with a homer and six RBIs in his career opposite Boyd. Moreover, Morales is 8-for-27 with a pair of blasts over the past seven days.
The over is 4-1 in Volquez’s last five starts overall.
Betting on the Detroit Tigers
Sure, the Royals have hit well when up against Boyd as mentioned earlier, but also consider the fact that Detroit is 7-3 in the southpaw’s last 10 starts.
Boyd showed he’s capable of unfurling excellent performances when he tossed eight innings of one-run ball while striking out seven in an 8-1 road win over the Twins on September 20. He now eyes another sterling outing today at home, where he is 3-2 with an unspectacular 4.11 ERA in nine appearances thus far this season.
As for the offense, Detroit has been getting Boyd 4.34 RS/9 this month. Cameron Maybin and Miguel Cabrera have been fantastic at the plate of late, hitting .350 and .333 over the last seven days, respectively, as of this writing. In addition, Cabrera is 6-for-16 (.375) in his career against Volquez.
Writer’s Prediction
Detroit wins, 6-3.
