Betting on the Los Angeles Angels

“On the pitching side this is probably our worst game of the year.”

[sc:MLB240banner ]That was the scathing statement of Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia after his Angels side was hammered by the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday. It was a disappointing outing for the Angels who slumped to their second consecutive defeat after winning their previous five games.

The Angels allowed 10 runs in a game for the first time since September 9, 2014. They allowed more runs (10) in their defeat Monday than they had in their previous six games combined (9). C.J. Wilson had a shaky start, giving up four earned runs on 10 hits and two walks in just five innings of work.

For the Angels to snap their two-game losing skid, they will need to get their starting pitching in order. The Angels will fancy their chances of doing just that as they will have Hector Santiago (2-2, 2.41 ERA) on the mound tonight.

Santiago is fresh off his first win in four starts, hurling six innings of one-run ball in Los Angeles’ 2-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies on May 13. The left-hander’s control was spot on in that game, throwing eight strikeouts and allowing no walks. Santiago has been solid for the Angels this season, allowing one earned run or fewer in four of seven starts thus far.

Expected to lead the Angels’ offense tonight are Chris Iannetta and Erick Aybar. Ianneta has been on fire the past two games, going 5-for-8 with a homer and three RBIs. Aybar, on the other hand, has been sizzling at the plate as well, going 11-for-24 in his last six outings.

The Angels are 4-6 in their last 10 road games.

Betting on the Toronto Blue Jays

Jose Bautista

The losing rut is finally over.

The Toronto Blue Jays finally snapped their longest losing streak of the season, beating the Los Angeles Angels in a high-scoring affair Monday afternoon. The bats finally came alive for the Blue Jays who ended their five-game losing slide.

Jose Bautista led the offensive explosion for Toronto, recording a homer and three RBIs. It wasn’t just Bautista, though, who starred for the Blue Jays in the series opener as Josh Donaldson and Russell Martin each finished the game with three hits apiece. The trio has been solid at the plate for the Blue Jays this season, combining for 22 homers and 72 RBIs thus far this campaign.

Starting for the Blue Jays tonight is Aaron Sanchez (3-3, 4.26 ERA). The right-hander was simply atrocious in his last outing, allowing a career-worst five runs in a May 13 defeat to Baltimore. It was a disappointing performance for Sanchez who lost for the first time since April 16.

If Sanchez runs into trouble again tonight, the onus is on the Toronto offense to carry the load. Justin Smoak and Danny Valencia are expected to be the first names in the lineup tonight as they have fared extremely well against Angels starter Hector Santiago in the past.

Smoak is 5-for-8 in his career against Santiago with one RBI while Valencia is 3-for-6 with a walk and a double. Donaldson, who was involved in a shouting match against the Angels in the series opener, has struggled against Santiago, though, going just 1-for-13 lifetime against the right-hander.

The Blue Jays are 8-2 in their last 10 home games.

Writer’s Prediction

Toronto (-117) wins, 7-4.
