Betting on the Los Angeles Dodgers
The NL West champion Dodgers are limping into the playoffs. They’ve now gone just 1-4 in their last five games. Not even ace Clayton Kershaw was able to stop the bleeding as he was outdueled by rookie Ty Blach in a 3-0 loss yesterday.
Kenta Maeda (16-10, 3.28 ERA) will get the last chance to stop the rot in the regular season finale. The Japanese right-hander gave up three runs in just four innings in his last start, a 7-1 loss to the San Diego Padres.
However, he has had a lot of success against the Giants this season. He’s won all three starts against them – all in Dodger Stadium – while sporting a 2.65 ERA. He gave up one run on three hits in five innings in his last start against the Giants on September 21.
Betting on the San Francisco Giants
Whatever happens, the Giants are guaranteed at least one more game after the regular season ends. They will either play the New York Mets in the NL Wild Card Game if they win, or get a tiebreaker game with the St. Louis Cardinals if they lose. Obviously, they’d rather take the former, which should give them sufficient motivation to win their regular season finale.
Matt Moore will be tasked to deliver that crucial win. The lefty has been a good midseason pickup for the Giants, but he has had an inconsistent time against Los Angeles this season. He has gone just 2-2 with a 5.66 ERA in four starts vs. L.A., and had arguably his best and worst outings of the year against the Dodgers after he arrived to San Francisco.
He nearly pitched a no-hitter at Dodger Stadium on Aug. 25, but lost it with just one out to go. And in his latest outing on Sept. 21, he lasted just one inning and gave up six runs in a 9-3 loss.
Writer’s Prediction
The Giants grab the second NL wild-card spot as they down the Dodgers, 6-2.
