Betting on the LSU Tigers
Point Spread: -7
LSU was in full command in their wins in Weeks 1 and 2. They shutout Brigham Young, 27-0, and then eased past Chattanooga, 45-10, using efficiency in various areas.
Defensively, they are breaking down opponents everywhere. The pass defense only allow opposing quarterbacks to throw for 138 yards and complete 48 percent of their passes, while the front seven are giving up an impressive 31.5 rushing yards on 1.5 yards per carry. In their season-opener, they pretty much beat BYU’s ground game to the pulp when they had them tally an embarrassing -5 yards after 14 carries.
The offense is well-built as well. Quarterback Danny Etling doesn’t have to do much, since LSU has an elite-level defense and a pair of quality running backs in Derrius Guice and Darrel Williams (354 yards, 5.4 YPC, seven touchdowns), but he can definitely be more than a game manager. He’s 22-for-31 for 398 yards with one TD this season, and has a big-play receiver in DJ Clark, who has 180 yards in just seven reception (25.7 yards per catch).
Dating back to last year, the Tigers are 7-2 in their last nine games (6-3 ATS).
Betting on the Mississippi State Bulldogs
The first two weeks of the season have also been smooth-sailing for the Bulldogs. After a 49-0 cakewalk over Charleston Southern in the opener, they visited Louisiana Tech in Week 2 and handed them a 57-21 blowout, which included a 36-0 run in the first half.
Mississippi State’s aggressiveness also caused La. Tech to have a now-infamous 3rd and 93 situation.
Things are clicking on both sides of the field. On defense, a great all-around effort is resulting in just 10.5 points and 174 total yards allowed per game (2.8 yards per play). Their blitzes have also been effective, with 12 different guys already having at least o.5 tackle for loss, and opposing RBs only gaining 1.9 YPC.
Led by dual-threat QB Nick Fitzgerald, the offense is just as potent, if not better. The junior signal-caller currently has a 5-1 TD-INT ratio and is accounting for 181.5 passing yards and 76 rushing yards per contest. He and his backfield – Aeris Williams and Kylin Hill – have five TDs together, and they collectively run for 7.6 YPC.
Fitzgerald’s receiving corps is well-balanced; four different pass-catchers have four more receptions and each have at least one TD grab.
Dating back to last season, MS State is 4-3 at home in its last seven games (3-4 ATS).
