2016 Michigan State Spartans Football Preview

Team Strengths:

Michigan State won’t be a tasty matchup for anyone this season largely because of the Spartans’ stop unit. The Spartans have long prided themselves of their ability to slow down opposing offenses under head coach Mark Dantonio and Michigan State’s front seven should remain sturdy. Malik McDowell and Riley Bullough are back to wreak havoc in the middle while the safety tandem of Montae Nicholson and Demetrious Cox will team up with a vicious secondary that returns cornerbacks Darian Hicks and Vayante Copeland. The Spartans have odds of +3,300 to win the national title.

Team Weaknesses:

Finding a replacement for quarterback Connor Cook was a tall order for the Spartans but they don’t have to look far with Tyler O’Connor ready to step up and become the starter after years as a backup. That said, transitioning from Cook to someone like O’Connor is also asking the entire offense to gel fast or else risk stumbling right out of the gate. There’s also concern on the special teams, particularly in kicking field goals. The Spartans were second worst in the Big Ten in field goal percentage last season with a 63.2 clip.
