Betting on the Missouri Tigers (+13)
The most surprising thing about the Missouri Tigers this season has been their offense. Through four games, new offensive coordinator Josh Heupel has done an awesome job in utilizing every piece he has, particularly in quarterback Drew Lock, whose current form has placed a huge smile on every Missouri fan’s face.
Lock has performed the way any football coach could ask for. He’s thrown for 1,508 yards, 14 touchdowns and only three interceptions. The Tigers are going to need him to continue posting those kinds of numbers when they go for their first win against a Power Five school in this Saturday’s showdown with LSU.
Missouri, which is averaging an SEC-best 569.5 yards of total offense, will be looking to replicate its 79-0 beating of Delaware State last week. However, translating that scoring success against a proven LSU defense that’s surrendering just 341.3 total yards, the third-fewest in the conference, might be wishful thinking. Then again, the recent firing of longtime coach Les Miles and the indefinite suspension of DT Davon Godchaux puts LSU in a precarious state.
Also, scoring isn’t the only thing that Missouri’s improved on this season. The team’s done a tremendous job in stopping opponents from lighting up the scoreboard, giving up just 18.8 points per game. The Tigers can certainly rattle a distracted LSU squad even on this side of the field.
Missouri is 4-6 SU and ATS in its last 10 road games.
Betting on the LSU Tigers (-13)
On a mental standpoint, this is probably the most challenging game for the LSU Tigers this season. The release of head coach Les Miles was truly sad and surprising, but the team can’t let this swallow them up completely. There’s a lot of football left to be played, and the Tigers have the pieces to contend for at least the SEC title.
This Saturday’s date with Missouri is going to be interesting, especially since the LSU offense will be adjusting to a new man in charge—Ed Orgeron. With that being the case, it’s only fair to expect a bit of disorder, some blown coverages and a lack in energy from the Tigers’ overall play.
One thing’s for sure, though, is that Leonard Fournette will be the focal point of the LSU attack. The junior running back has been carving opposing secondary defenses with ease, as he’s managed to rack up at least 101 or more rushing yards in each game this season. But Fournette’s only found the end zone twice, and is currently dealing with a minor ankle injury.
Whether or not Fournette suits up, the Tigers also have to inflict some damage through their passing game, which is only racking up 154.7 yards per contest. And to do that, they really need Danny Etling, who’s passed for just 433 yards, three TDs and one pick this season, to begin playing like an ideal starting quarterback.
