What does that mean for the White Sox? Find out more about it when you read today’s list of best baseball games to bet on.
[sc:MLBArticles ]MLB Picks and Predictions for Wednesday, August 20, 2014
Los Angeles Angels vs. Boston Red Sox (7:00 PM ET)
Line: Los Angeles Angels (-138) at Boston Red Sox (+128); total: 8.5 – see all MLB lines
[sc:MLB240banner ]Three-straight losses have Boston falling even deeper into the cellar of the AL East. The Red Sox will look to arrest their skid as they start Clay Buchholz (5-7, 5.79 ERA), who is looking for his first win since July.
The Red Sox, however, are 4-1 in Buchholz’s last five starts against the Halos. The Angels, who have been trampling sub-.500 teams lately on their way to the top of the AL West, are 8-2 in their last 10 games.
Writer’s prediction: The Angels come out victorious.
Atlanta Braves vs. Pittsburgh Pirates (7:05 PM ET)
Line: Atlanta Braves (+115) at Pittsburgh Pirates (-125); total: 7.0– see all MLB lines
The Braves have come alive in the NL East race with five straight wins, and they’ll go for a sweep of the slumping Pittsburgh Pirates tonight in the third and last game of the series. The Pirates, who have dropped their seventh straight game following their 11-3 loss to Atlanta last night, will send Gerrit Cole (7-4, 3.78 ERA) to the mound. Tonight’s contest will be Cole’s first start after going into the disabled list last July. The Pirates are 6-1 in Cole’s last seven starts as favorites.
Writer’s prediction: Cole helps Pirates stop skid, as Pittsburgh wins.
Detroit Tigers vs. Tampa Bay Rays (7:10 PM ET)
Line: Detroit Tigers (+120) at Tampa Bay Rays (-130); total: 7.5– see all MLB lines
Although Rick Porcello (13-8, 3.28 ERA) is just 1-3 with an ERA of 3.28 in four starts thus far this month, the Tigers don’t lose often when the right-hander toes the slab in the second game of a series. They are 9-2 in Porcello’s last 11 starts following a series-opener. Porcello will be up against a rising star in the Rays’ rotation in Jake Odorizzi (9-9, 3.82 ERA). The Rays are 5-1 in Odorizzi’s last six starts, including their recent 4-0 win against the Chicago White Sox last August 9th, where he tossed six-shutout innings.
Writer’s prediction: Tampa Bay levels the series with a win.

Cincinnati Reds vs. St. Louis Cardinals (7:15 PM ET)
Line: Cincinnati Reds (+102) at St. Louis Cardinals (-112); total: 7.0 – see all MLB lines
If only Johnny Cueto (15-6, 2.06 ERA) can pitch every night, everything would be easy in Cincinnati. As it is, the Reds have sunk lower in the NL Central, no thanks to a 2-9 record in their last 11 games. With Cueto on the mound tonight, Cincinnati can still hope for the best as the team is 4-0 in the Dominican’s last four starts, and 8-2 in the last 10 overall. The Cards, meanwhile, will have Lance Lynn (13-8, 2.91 ERA), who isn’t too shabby either with a 3-0 record and 2.41 ERA in three starts since the start of August.
Writer’s prediction: Same old result for the Reds when Cueto’s on the mound. Cincy wins.
Baltimore Orioles vs. Chicago White Sox (8:10 PM ET)
Line: Baltimore Orioles (-144) at Chicago White Sox (+134); total: 8.5 – see all MLB lines
The hard-hitting Orioles have battered Chicago in the first two games of the series, outscoring the South Siders, 13-3. Runs may be harder to come by tonight for the O’s, though, as the White Sox send Hector Noesi (7-8, 4.84) to the mound. Noesi has been among the bright spots for the White Sox, who are 5-1 in his last six starts. Noesi is also 3-0 with an ERA of 2.79 this month. The O’s, on the other hand, are 3-0 in their last three overall.
Writer’s prediction: White Sox pulls the rug underneath the O’s with a decisive win as home underdogs.
