MLB Free Picks – Baseball Games of the Day – August 28, 2014

Awesome action in the MLB just keeps on coming. Below are five games that are the best baseball games to bet on today.

There’s no bigger game tonight than that of the Oakland A’s and the Los Angeles Angels. Sonny Gray gets another crack at the Angels just days after beating them. Can he lead the A’s to another win over their American League West rivals? Or will it be C.J. Wilson’s turn to star for the Angels after losing to Oakland last week?

You know what else is happening tonight? A ton of college football games.  See our preview of the big SEC matchup between the Texas A&M Aggies and the South Carolina Gamecocks here.

MLB Picks and Predictions for Thursday, August 28, 2014

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Baltimore Orioles (7:05 PM ET)

Line: Tampa Bay Rays (+110) at Baltimore Orioles (-120); total: 7.0– see all MLB lines

[sc:MLB240banner ]The Rays can earn a split of their four-game series with Baltimore with a win tonight, as they start Jeremy Hellickson (1-2, 2.61 ERA) for the eighth time since he recuperated from an elbow injury. Tampa Bay is 4-1 in the right-handed pitcher’s last five starts against Baltimore. The Orioles, who suffered their first defeat (3-1) in five games at home last night, are 3-1 in Bud Norris’ (11-8, 3.91) last four starts overall.

Writer’s prediction: Tampa Bay wins.

Atlanta Braves vs. New York Mets (7:10 PM ET)

Line: Atlanta Braves (-120) at New York Mets (+110); total: 7.0– see all MLB lines

Atlanta got a strong outing from Julio Teheran last night to repulse the Mets, 3-2, allowing the Braves to return to the win column. Set to start next for the Braves is Mike Minor (5-8, 4.90), who’s pitching well of late. The lefty has garnered a 2.53 ERA in his last three starts. The Mets, though, are 4-1 in their last five outings against a left-handed starter. That said, bettors looking to back New York should also consider the Braves’ 3-0 record in their last three games at Citi Field when facing Jonathan Niese (7-9, 3.47 ERA).

Writer’s prediction: Atlanta wins.

Cleveland Indians vs. Chicago White Sox (8:10 PM ET)

Line: Cleveland Indians (-150) at Chicago White Sox (+135); total: 8.5– see all MLB lines

Carlos Carrasco (5-4, 3.14 ERA) might not be the ideal pitcher to start for Cleveland against the White Sox, as the South Siders are 5-1 in the last six times they’ve faced the Venezuelan. The White Sox’s John Danks (9-8, 4.96 ERA) hasn’t been any better when facing the Indians either, which is evidenced by Chicago’s 1-4 record in the lefty’s last five starts against Cleveland. On the plus side, the White Sox own an encouraging 7-3 record in their last 10 visits of the Tribe at U.S. Cellular Field.

Writer’s prediction: Chicago wins.

Minnesota Twins vs. Kansas City Royals (8:10 PM ET)

Line: Minnesota Twins (+140) at Kansas City Royals (-155); total: 8.5– see all MLB lines

Jeremy Guthrie

The Royals are heating up again after posting back-to-back wins. With a new-found momentum and “Twins-killer” Jeremy Guthrie (10-10, 4.32 ERA) on the mound later, Kansas City looks to be a good bet to make it three in a row. The Royals are 3-0 in Guthrie’s last three starts against Minnesota, and 5-1 in the last six overall. Minnesota will counter Guthrie with Tommy Milone (6-4, 4.08 ERA), whose last 10 starts have resulted to a combined 8-2 record for teams (Oakland, Minnesota) he’s pitched for this season.

Writer’s prediction: Kansas Wins

Oakland Athletics vs. Los Angeles Angels (10:15 PM ET)

Line: Oakland Athletics (-115) at Los Angeles Angels (+105); total: 7.5– see all MLB lines

Sonny Gray (13-7, 3.00 ERA) earned a win in his last start against the Angels last August 22nd. In that game, he allowed three earned runs on six hits in 8.1 innings of duty in the A’s 5-3 win. The victory improved the A’s record to 3-0 in their last three meetings with LA when Gray is on the mound. C.J. Wilson (10-8, 4.45 ERA), who picked up a loss in that game, gets the ball again later. The Angels are 8-2 in his last 10 home starts.

Writer’s prediction: Oakland wins.
