MLB Picks and Predictions for Tuesday, August 5, 2014

Detroit Tigers vs. New York Yankees (7:05 PM ET)

Line: Detroit Tigers (-135) at New York Yankees (+125); total: 7.5 – see all MLB lines

[sc:MLB240banner ]In David Price (11-8, 3.11 ERA), the Tigers are getting a pitcher who’s had substantial success in the Bronx. Dating back to his days as a Tampa Bay Ray, Price is 6-2 with a 3.57 ERA in 12 starts in Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees are trying to sustain their streak, which has kept them within striking distance of division leaders, the Baltimore Orioles. They are 3-0 in their last three games, and are 4-1 in their last five meetings with Detroit.

Writer’s prediction: Price gets off to a good start by leading the Tigers past the Yankees.

Baltimore Orioles vs. Toronto Blue Jays (7:07 PM ET)

Line: Baltimore Orioles (+109) at Toronto Blue Jays (-119); total: 9.0 – see all MLB lines

Baltimore can increase its division lead against the Blue Jays, who are hot on the O’s heels despite losing three straight. Baltimore’s Bud Norris (8-7, 3.69 ERA) steps on the mound tonight to face the team he’s already beaten twice this season. Norris is 2-0 with 1.83 ERA in three starts against Toronto this season. Toronto, on the other hand, will give the ball to Mark Buehrle (11-7, 3.11 ERA). The Blue Jays are 7-3 in his last 10 home starts.

Writer’s prediction:  Toronto breaks slump, beats the Orioles.

San Francisco Giants vs. Milwaukee Brewers (8:10 PM ET)

Line: San Francisco (+120) at Milwaukee Brewers (-130); total: 8.0 – see all MLB lines

By taking three of four games of their previous series against the New York Mets, the Giants appeared to have recovered from a disastrous stretch that saw them lose six straight. San Francisco’s Tim Lincecum (9-7, 4.21 ERA) will have the ball tonight, as the Giants take the struggling Brewers.

The Giants are 3-0 in Lincecum’s last three starts at Milwaukee. The Brewers are returning home after a seven-game road trip, where they went 2-5. They are 6-2 in their last eight home games.

Writer’s prediction: The Giants hand Milwaukee a loss.

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Oakland Athletics (10:05 PM ET)

Line: Tampa Bay Rays (+115) at Oakland Athletics (-125); total: 7.5 – see all MLB lines

He’ll face Drew Smyly (3-9, 3.93), who’s about to make his first ever start as part of the Tampa Bay Rays. The Athletics are 4-0 in their last four home games against Tampa Bay, while the Rays are 8-2 in their last 10 road games. The Rays haven’t lost consecutive road games in their last 20.

Writer’s prediction: Tampa Bay forces a rubber-match with a win over the A’s.

Los Angeles Angels vs. Los Angeles Dodgers (10:10 PM ET)

Line: Los Angeles Angels (+200) at Los Angeles Dodgers (-240); total: 6.0 – see all MLB lines

Josh Hamilton, Kole Calhoun, LA Angels, MLB

The Angels’ offense got to Zack Greinke last night, as they won in the series opener, 5-0. Up next for them is Clayton Kershaw (13-2, 1.71 ERA), who seems to be incapable of losing. The Dodgers are 11-0 in Kershaw’s last 11 starts. With their win in the first game, the Angels improved to 4-1 in their last five road games. They are also 4-1 in Hector Santiago’s (3-7, 3.76 ERA) last five starts overall.

Writer’s prediction: The Angels deals the Dodgers with a rare loss when Kershaw in on the mound.
