MLB Picks and Predictions for Tuesday, July 22, 2014

Texas Rangers vs. New York Yankees (7:00 PM ET)

Line: Texas Rangers (+150) at New York Yankees (-170); total: 9.0 –  see all MLB lines

[sc:MLB240banner ]Shin-Soo Choo finally got a hit after 21 hitless at-bats, going 2-for-5 with one RBI to help the Rangers notch only their second win in 10 games with a 4-2 decision over the Yankees last night. Texas hasn’t won in straight games since late June, but they have the opportunity to do just that tonight in Yankee stadium. The Rangers are 3-0 in their last three games there.

After hurdling Yankees’ starter Shane Greene, the Rangers will face Chase Whitley (4-3, 5.10 ERA), who is only 1-3 in his last four starts, giving up 20 runs in the process. The over is 6-1 in Whitley’s last seven starts.

Writer’s prediction: The Rangers make it two in a row against New York.

Boston Red Sox vs. Toronto Blue Jays (7:07 PM ET)

Line: Boston Red Sox (-104) at Toronto Blue Jays (-106); total: 9.0 – see all MLB lines

The Red Sox unleashed a flurry of runs against the Toronto Blue Jays last night as they extended their winning streak to five games, after a 14-1 beatdown of their fellow American League East division team. With the struggling Jake Peavy on the mound for Boston tonight, that kind of offense might have to show up in order for the Red Sox to continue winning. Peavy is 0-8 with 5.21 ERA in his last 14 starts.

Meanwhile, J.A. Happ (7-5, 4.91 ERA) looks to get a win in his first start since July 7. The Blue Jays have won in his last two starts. The total has also hit the under in six of Happ’s last seven starts.

Writer’s prediction: Boston defeats the Blue Jays.

Kansas City Royals vs. Chicago White Sox (8:10 PM ET)

Line: Kansas City Royals (-110) at Chicago White Sox (EVEN); total: 10.0 – see all MLB lines

Scott Carroll (4-5, 4.19 ERA) has been fantastic in his last two starts, winning both outings by allowing just three hits and no earned runs in 11.2 of combined innings. The White Sox are relying on the right-hander to hush the Royals’ offense again after starter Chris Sale led the South Siders to a 3-1 win in the series’ first game.

The Royals have been struggling on offense since the start of the second half, losing all of their last four games while being outscored by opponents, 16-6. Facing Carroll later is Bruce Chen (1-2, 6.46), who has a 2-0 record and a 1.40 ERA in the last four games he’s started versus the White Sox.

Writer’s prediction: Chicago prolongs Royals’ search for firs post-All-Star break win.

Tampa Bay Rays vs. St. Louis Cardinals (8:15 PM ET)

Line: Tampa Bay Rays (+150) at St. Louis Cardinals (-170); total: 7.0 – see all MLB lines

Tampa Bay is scraping the bottom of the AL East, but are making a serious run for a postseason spot. The Rays are 5-0 in their last five games. They have also won six-straight games on the road. The Rays can make it seven if they can solve Cardinals’ ace Adam Wainwright (12-4, 1.83 ERA). Wainwright pitched seven scoreless innings the last time he faced Tampa Bay, earning a 1-0 win. The Cards are 8-2 in Wainwright’s last 10 starts overall.

Writer’s prediction:  The Cards cut Rays’ winning streak.

Baltimore Orioles vs. Los Angeles Angels (10:10 PM ET)

Line: Baltimore Orioles (+134) at Los Angeles Angels (-144); total: 8.5 – see all MLB lines

Adam Wainwright

Baltimore held down the red-hot Angels to just two runs – tied for lowest in LA’s last 10 games – as the O’s won 4-2 in the first of their three-game series. With the win, the O’s are now 4-1 in their last five meetings with the Angels. Los Angeles, on the other hand, is primed for a bounce-back. The Angels haven’t lost consecutively in their last 29 games.

Writer’s prediction:  The Angels tie series with a win over the O’s.
