Boston Red Sox ace Clay Buchholz has had tremendous success in Toronto over his last nine trips there. After seeing Boston’s winning streak get snapped last night, will Buchholz add that to his motivation and flash his brilliant form once again on the Blue Jays?

In another matchup, Jered Weaver anchors the Los Angeles Angels tonight against the confident Baltimore Orioles in a game that will affect the tight pennant races in the AL East and AL West. Can the Angels find their groove at the plate again and avoid getting swept by Baltimore?

MLB Picks and Predictions for Wednesday, July 23, 2014

Texas Rangers vs. New York Yankees (7:00 PM ET)

Line: Texas Rangers (-118) at New York Yankees (+108); total: 7.5 –  see all MLB lines

[sc:MLB240banner ]With the way their season is going, the Rangers should be glad to see Yu Darvish (9-5, 2.88 ERA) step on the mound tonight for them, as they are 7-3 in his last 10 road starts.  Darvish is coming off a a scintillating performance, where he went six-plus innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out 12 batters in Texas’ 5-1 win against the Toronto Blue Jays last July 18th.

The Yankees, on the other hand, are 3-1 in their last four home games, and will start David Phelps (4-4, 3.87 ERA), whose last seven starts at the Bronx resulted to five wins by the Yankees.

Writer’s prediction: The Rangers win.

Boston Red Sox vs. Toronto Blue Jays (7:07 PM ET)

Line: Boston Red Sox (-102) at Toronto Blue Jays (-108); total: 8.5 – see all MLB lines

The Blue Jays ended Boston’s winning streak at five games with their 7-3 win last night. They’ll have another streak to beat later, though, as the Red Sox start Clay Buchholz (5-5, 5.46 ERA) in the third game of their series. Boston hasn’t lost in Toronto in Buchholz’s last nine starts at Rogers Centre, where he is 8-0 with a 1.41 ERA. Buchholz will be met by R.A. Dickey (7-10, 3.95 ERA), who lost his last two starts, partly because the Blue Jays were only able to give him one run in support.

The total has hit the under in Toronto’s last three games when Dickey is on the mound.

Writer’s prediction: The Red Sox return to the win column with a win over Toronto.

Tampa Bay Rays vs. St. Louis Cardinals (8:15 PM ET)

Line: Tampa Bay Rays (+110) at St. Louis Cardinals (-120); total: 7.0 – see all MLB lines

After tagging All-Star Adam Wainwright with six runs on their way to a 7-2 win in the first game of their two-game set last night, the Rays are now staring at the possibility of extending their winning streak to seven games. Up next for them is Lance Lynn (11-6, 3.13 ERA), who has picked up a win in each of his last three outings with an ERA of 1.86. The Cards are 4-1 in Lynn’s last five starts at Busch Stadium.

Writer’s prediction: Tampa Bay extends their season-best winning streak to seven games.

Baltimore Orioles vs. Los Angeles Angels (10:10 PM ET)

Line: Baltimore Orioles (+139) at Los Angeles Angels (-154); total: 8.0 – see all MLB lines

Jered Weaver

For the first time in 30 games, the Angels suffered back-to-back defeats after a 4-2 loss at the hands of Baltimore last night. With Jered Weaver (10-6, 3.43 ERA) starting later, Los Angeles looks to get another solid outing from the right-hander to get the club back to the win column. The Angels are 6-0 in Weaver’s last six starts.

The Orioles, meanwhile, are banking on Chris Tillman (7-5, 4.03 ERA) to suppress the Angels’ offense that could roar back after noticeably going silent after the All-Star break. The Orioles are 7-3 in Tillman’s last 10 road starts.

Writer’s prediction: Weaver dominates Baltimore as LA wins.

Houston Astros vs. Oakland Athletics (10:05 PM ET)

Line: Houston Astros (+210) at Oakland Athletics (-250); total: 8.0 – see all MLB lines

The Astros finally won a game in Oakland in their fourth game there this season, and in the process, won their third straight meeting against the Athletics.

Brad Peacock (3-6, 4.39 ERA) takes his turn to pitch against the A’s tonight and although the Astros are only 1-5 in his last six road starts, the right-hander still pitched relatively well during that stretch, not allowing more than three runs in any of those games. He will match up against Jesse Chavez (7-6, 3.14 ERA), who collected two wins in his last three home starts.

Writer’s prediction:  Oakland beats Astros.
