Betting on the Navy Midshipmen (+7.5)
Navy is at its best when the team hits the ground. Temple learned that the hard way last week, when the Midshipmen took the Memphis Tigers to the woodshed, rushing for 447 yards and four touchdowns, in a dominant 42-28 victory.
The team’s deadly offense begins and starts with senior quarterback Will Worth, who transformed into a one-man wrecking crew in the Memphis game. Worth barely passed the ball against the Tigers, completing 3 of 4 passes for 85 yards with two touchdowns, but he went supernova using his legs, exploding for 201 rushing yards and three scores. South Florida was gutted by Temple’s ground attack in a loss last week, allowing the Owls cover 319 yards of real estate last week, so the Bulls being skinned alive by Navy’s deadlier rushing game is something to be expected of this Friday.
South Florida hasn’t shown any teeth against the run this season, as evidenced by its conference-worst 206.25rushing yards allowed per game. That’s a salivating matchup for Navy’s high-powered offense that ranks fourth in the nation with 293.17 rushing yards per game.
Navy is 3-2 ATS in its last five road games.
Betting on the South Florida Bulls (-7.5)
South Florida coach Willie Taggart will be the first to admit that his team’s defense isn’t something he’d brag about. The Bulls are allowing 28.4 points per game on 447.6 total yards—the worst mark in the AAC.
But Taggart will also tell you that he has confidence in his offense to make up for any defensive shortcomings.
Coming off a 46-30 loss to Temple last week, the Bulls look to fight fire with fire this Friday against Navy. South Florida is 11th in the nation in scoring with 43.1 points per game and is particularly potent on the ground, as it generates 255.5 rushing yards per contest. Quarterback Quinton Flowers has the chops to cut Navy’s defense down to size.
Flowers has passed for 1,772 yards and 15 touchdowns this season on 58.5 completion percentage. He’s more effective on the ground, though, leading the Bulls with 745 rushing yards to go with eight touchdowns. Complementing Flowers in the backfield is running back Marlon Mack, who has 659 rushing yards on 97 carries to go with 10 touchdowns.
South Florida is 7-3 ATS in its last 10 at home.
