Top Five Heisman Trophy Hopefuls

Leonard Fournette, Running Back (LSU)

[sc:NCAA240banner ]Much like what he’s doing to opposing defenses, Leo Fournette is running away with the Heisman. The record-breaking sophomore became the very first SEC player to rush for 200-plus yards for three consecutive games after he gashed Eastern Michigan for 233 yards and three touchdowns. He currently leads the entire FBS in rushing yards per game (216) and rushing touchdowns (11).

There’s still a little over half the season remaining, but with what Fournette is showing, taking him at -250 right now might be the wise before it gets even lower in the coming weeks.

Trevone Boykin, Quarterback (TCU)

Trevone+Boykin+Texas+v+TCU

One of the top front-runners for the Heisman in preseason, Trevone Boykin has certainly been living up to all that hype recently. The senior quarterback is tied with Baylor’s Seth Russell for the most passing touchdowns in the FBS through five weeks with 19, against just three interceptions. He also has two rushing scores to boot. The top non-running back contender in the list is currently +800 to claim this year’s Heisman.

Ezekiel Elliott, Running Back (Ohio State)

Elliott, the inaugural College Football Playoff Offensive MVP, hadn’t been putting up the numbers that powered the Buckeyes to a national title last season. That is, not until he exploded for a career-high 274 yards and three touchdowns in Ohio State’s win against Indiana.

With the Buckeyes’ quarterback play still very uneven, the opportunity is definitely there for Elliott – a +800 Heisman contender – to continue producing huge numbers in that Ohio State offense.

Derrick Henry, Running Back (Alabama)

Derrick Henry

Alabama hasn’t had a Heisman winner since Mark Ingram in 2009, but Derrick Henry might just have a shot at breaking that drought this year. Henry, a similarly-built, bruising back in the Ingram mold, had 148 rushing yards in the Tide’s terrific 38-10 win over Georgia to put his name in back in the Heisman discussion.

If ‘Bama does return to the College Football Playoff with Henry as the centerpiece of that offense, his odds at +1,200 could turn out to be very profitable.

Nick Chubb, Running Back (Georgia)

Although he was upstaged by Henry in their marquee matchup, Nick Chubb (+1,500) shouldn’t be counted out of the Heisman race just yet. Chubb is still putting up very stellar numbers (149 rushing yards per game, seven touchdowns) as the centerpiece of a Georgia offense that could very realistically go on to play in the SEC Championship game.
