Betting on the New York Giants
The Giants are looking to make a repeat of last year’s preseason finale win over New England, as they pay their inter-conference rivals a visit in Foxborough this Thursday.
Coming off their first win of the preseason, a close 32-31 home victory over the New York Jets last Saturday, the Giants hope for more consistency from themselves this time around. The Giants led the Jets, 29-3 at the half, but let the Bryce Petty and company roar back in the second half, with the Jets outscoring the Big Blue, 28-3.
Despite some lapses, the Giants’ defense flashed brilliance against the Jets, as they made two interceptions that ended in touchdowns. They’ll have to keep it up against the Pats’ offense that generated 257 passing yards while not allowing a sack last week against Detroit.
Geno Smith’s job could also be on the line in the upcoming showdown with the Pats. Smith passed for 51 yards on 5 0f 10 completions without a touchdown against his former team but a strong showing against the Patriots could be the difference between unemployment and him cashing in checks in the regular season.
Betting on the New England Patriots
You win some, you lose some. While the Patriots got their first win of the preseason with a 30-28 victory over the Detroit Lions last Friday, it came at the expense of wide receiver Julius Edelman, who suffered a right knee injury that is being reported as season-ending.
With that, the Patriots have one more preseason game left to see who’s the one going to move up the pecking order of wide receivers come the regular season. That could likely be Danny Amendola and Chris Hogan, but both could see limited action against the Giants to avoid further injury to key players.
The same could be true for Tom Brady, who recorded 174 passing yards on 12 of 15 passing with a pair of touchdowns and an interception. Whether Brady would play or not, the Patriots still have Jimmy Garoppolo. Garoppolo could be a starter on other teams, but with Brady still with the Pats, he’ll have to wait a little longer to get a starting gig. In any case, he’s an effective backup who went 7 of 12 for 83 yards against Detroit.
Writer’s Prediction
Detroit wins, 28-24.
