Betting on the New York Mets (odds)
Regular Season Record: 55-34
The Mets came away with a series win against National League East division chief rivals Atlanta Braves, scoring two wins in three games out of that set. And toeing the rubber for the Mets this Thursday night will be Carlos Carrasco, who is finally steadying the ship after a shaky stretch. Carrasco has allowed just 3 earned runs on 13 total hits in 11.1 innings over his last two starts – both ending in a Mets victory. So far this season, Carrasco has a 9-4 record and a 4.55 ERA and 1.34 WHIP. Carrasco is winning games despite his subpar pitching numbers in large part because of the Mets’ offense that is providing him with a 5.71 runs per nine innings. Star outfielder Starling Marte remains day-to-day with a groin issue, but Francisco Lindor has been solid at the plate this month, batting .259 with 4 homers and 8 RBIs in 13 games this July.
Betting on the Chicago Cubs (odds)
Regular Season Record: 34-54
The Cubs are still looking to break out of their slump. After losing to the red-hot Baltimore Orioles 7-1 Wednesday night, the Cubs are now on a six-game losing streak. The Cubs hope that Keegan Thompson will deliver for them tonight. With a 7-3 record and a 3.014 ERA along with a 1.17 WHIP, Thompson has been one of the more reliable pitchers for Chicago, which is just 25th in the majors with a 4.67 ERA. The Cubs have lost in all of Thompson’s last three starts, but he allowed just more than an earned run just once in that span. Ian Happ will look to kickstart the Cubs’ offense, as he is slashing .28/.321/.460 this July so far.
Writer’s Prediction
The Mets win, 4-2.
