Line: New York Yankees (-163) at New York Mets (+148); total: 6.5 – view all MLB lines

Betting on the New York Yankees

Japanese rookie Masahiro Tanaka will put his undefeated 5-0 win-loss record on the line tonight when he goes up against the Mets for the first time in his career.

[sc:MLB240banner ]Tanaka has been worth the hype thus far for the Yankees. In his most recent start, which was coincidentally the last time his team won before diving into a four-game slump, Tanaka allowed two earned runs and struck out seven batters in 6.1 innings of work against the Milwaukee Brewers.

But as encouraging as it is for the Yankees to have their best pitcher on the mound, their bullpen seem able to spoil even the strongest of starts. Of the 10 runs given up by the Yankees to the Mets in their last game, five were allowed by their bullpen. Once Tanaka steps off the mound, how the Yankees relievers will perform is anyone’s guess.

After losing twice to the Mets at home, the Yankees will make a short trip to Citi Field, looking to return the favor. The Bronx Bombers are 43-19 in their last 62 games after losing the first two games of a series. Moreover, the over is 4-0 in the Yankees’ last four road games.

Betting on the New York Mets

Curtis Granderson, David Wright, New York Mets, MLB

The Mets overcame a wild outing from starter Zack Wheeler with 12 runs in the second game of their four-game, home-and-away series on Tuesday night. After winning both games in the Bronx, the Mets will go back to Citi Field, where they hope to continue their good showing from behind the plate.

The Mets are on a tear. Thanks to some help from the Yankees’ sloppy pitching, the Mets have compiled 21 runs in their last two games, a streak which in turn has seen Mets games’ go over the total in their last four straight.

Curtis Granderson and Daniel Murphy have been steadily driving in runs over the last seven days, combining for four homers and 12 RBI’s in their last six games.

Taking the mound tonight will be minor league call-up Rafael Montero, who had a 4-1 win-loss record and 3.67 ERA over at Triple-A Las Vegas. With an inexperienced pitcher starting for the Mets, the team’s resurgent batting will need to come to play to give the 23-year old right-hander confidence in his major league debut.

The Mets are 12-2 in their last 14 games against American League East teams.

Writer’s Prediction

With an untested rookie starting tonight for the Mets, betting on the Yankees, who have strikeout machine Tanaka, is the safer choice. Take the Yankees at -163, and expect the total to hit under 6.5.
