Betting on the New York Yankees (63-55)
The Subway Series between the New York Yankees and the New York Mets has tipped in favor of the Bronx Bombers once more, as the Yankees took the second game against their interstate rivals this Tuesday, 5-4.
The Yanks have won 10 of their last 14 meetings versus the Mets, and they’re still in great form to take the next two games in Queens just the same. Catcher Gary Sanchez has been unstoppable, extending his hitting streak to eight games with his two hits and a homer on Tuesday, giving him three home runs over the past four games.
Unfortunately, the Yankees may have to endure an untimely blow with closer Aroldis Chapman suffering some tightness in his hamstring on Tuesday and before nearly blowing his second save opportunity in less than a week.
Then again, Chapman hasn’t been up to par with his high standards this 2017, and he’ll be duly aided by Wednesday’s starter in Jaime Garcia (5-8, 4.50 ERA). The Mexican lefty’s not as reliable as with most of the starters in the majors, but he does get the job done on most occasions. On June 11 while he was still a member of the Minnesota Twins, Garcia allowed just two earned runs to the Mets in seven full innings of work.
Betting on the New York Mets (53-64)
Consider this a lost 2017 season for the New York Mets, who have not been able to overcome their slew of injuries like in last year’s campaign.
Over their last 16 games, the Mets have gone just 5-11. They won each of their games wherein they scored five or more runs and lost all 11 contests after failing to put up more than four runs during that stretch. Their offense has not been able to generate consistent production, with possible the exception of shortstop Amed Rosario, who has a five-game hit streak going for a total of seven hits and four runs scored.
While we’re on the topic of injuries, Robert Gsellman (5-5, 6.16 ERA) will be making his return from the DL since June 27 and is now penciled-in to make the start this Wednesday. Unfortunately for the Mets, Gsellman hasn’t done much to help his team’s odds of making the postseason after 14 mediocre starts this season, and he didn’t look good during his rehab stints in the minors leading up to his return, either.
Throw in the fact that the Mets have lost five of their last six home games, and the fans in Citi Field may be in for another lackluster outing from their team against their archenemies from across the five boroughs.
Writer’s Prediction
The Yankees make it three-straight over the Mets, 7-3.
